Book Description
Excerpt from Diary of David Zeisberger, Vol. 2: A Moravian Missionary Among the Indians of Ohio Saturday, 3. When last evening the brother of the Tawa chief with another man came here, and we heard that the chief lay with his people the other side of San dusky Bay, having nothing to eat, we collected several bushels of corn, also tobacco, and sent them to him and his people. He had been on the way to us, but could not get over the bay, the ice not being strong enough, and had to remain behind encamped there. We heard he was on his way to S'andusky to find out why the nations had not gone to the treaty, and will himself go there, having learned that they have not stood by the resolve of the Council of the Miami, but departed therefrom, though there they had all voted for peace. We still hope he can bring it to pass that there will be no open and general war. Sunday, 4. David preached about the story of the mur der of so many innocent children in Bethlehem. Edwards held the congregation meeting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The American National State and the Early West

The American National State and the Early West PDF Author: William H. Bergmann
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 113957681X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
This book challenges the widely held myth that the American national state was weak in the early days of the republic. William H. Bergmann reveals how the federal government used its fiscal and military powers, as well as bureaucratic authority, to enhance land acquisitions, promote infrastructure development and facilitate commerce and communication in the early trans-Appalachian West. Energetic federal state-building efforts prior to 1815 grew from national state security interests as Native Americans and British imperial designs threatened to unravel the republic. White Westerners and Western state governments partnered with the federal government to encourage commercial growth and emigration, to transform the borderland into a bordered land. Taking a regional approach, this work synthesizes the literatures of social history, political science and economic history to provide a new narrative of American expansionism, one that takes into account the unique historical circumstances in the Ohio Valley and the southern Great Lakes.
