Excerpt from A Soldier's Diary: The Story of a Volunteer; 1862-1865 This book is made up from my diary, which was sent home at frequent intervals, that my family and friends might know the details of my daily life. The events recorded were written down on the date of their occurrence, or while still fresh in my memory. In my comments on current events, I endeavored to Nothing extenuate, nor set down aught in malice, but to give expression to my own convictions. I had no thought at the time, nor for many years after, of having it published, but, as the years sped on, and the old veterans of the Civil War were being rapidly mustered for final discharge, I have been urged by many old friends and comrades to publish it, that our children and grandchildren may realize something of the hardships and trials their ancestors cheerfully endured for love of country.
