Book Description
Excerpt from Diary and Consultation Book (Public Department), 1753, Vol. 81: With an Introduction and Notes The Public Consultations rarely mention the military events of the year. But they forcibly depict the conditions caused by warfare. As in theprevious year there was. In 1753 the same dearth of investments, the same, difficulty of getting the merchants and weavers to fulfil their contracts3, the same com plaints from the farmers of revenue about the. Losses sustained at the hands of the enemy4 and even more than the same feverish activity on the part of the Government to supply the army with men, munitions and money. The severest strain was put on the Company's finances and to relax it many expedients were devised and' several reforms. Introduced. The vear also witnessed the re - estab lishment of the Mayor's Court and other Courts; of Justice and a thorough enquiry into the affairs of the subordinate settlement of Sumatra. Book Description
Excerpt from Diary and Consultation Book (Public Department), 1755, Vol. 84: With an Introduction and Notes Pigot and his Council were equally embai rassed by the independent and, in general, unreasonable attitude shown by Colonel Adlercron. The Public Consultations give us only a glimpse of this strained relationship between the Civil and Military authorities. In order to get a full view of it we may refer here to the Military Consultations as well. In the previous volume we have seen that it was not without much difficulty that Saunders had extorted a promise from the Colonel that he would do every thing to promote the Com -pany 's interests and would not interfere in the' 'command of their garri sons But the Colonel, it will be seen, did not scruple to break the promise the moment the restraining influence of Saunders was removed from the Government. Pigot, however, gave him little scope to exercise supreme authority over the Company's army or to meddle in country politics. He reminded him of the compact he had made with Saunders in those matters, and humoured him in other matters of lesser consequence. He acceded to his demands where prudence dictated such a course necessary but always impressed on him the cardinal fact that the Company's Civil authorities would never submit to the dictation of the Military authorities, even though such Military authorities might have been appointed by the Crown. The Company's Sword

The Company's Sword PDF Author: Christina Welsch
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 110898102X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
In the late eighteenth century, it was a cliché that the East India Company ruled India 'by the sword.' Christina Welsch shows how Indian and European soldiers shaped and challenged the Company's political expansion and how elite officers turned those dynamics into a bid for 'stratocracy' – a state dominated by its army. Combining colonial records with Mughal Persian sources from Indian states, The Company's Sword offers new insight into India's eighteenth-century military landscape, showing how elite officers positioned themselves as the sole actors who could navigate, understand, and control those networks. Focusing on south India, rather than the Company's better-studied territories in Bengal, the analysis provides a new approach, chronology, and geography through which to understand the Company Raj. It offers a fresh perspective of the Company's collapse after the rebellions of 1857, tracing the deep roots of that conflict to the Company's eighteenth-century development.
