Les dialogues qui forment la partie la plus importante de ce volume ont été écrits à Versailles pendant le mois de mai 1871. J'avais quitté Paris à la fin d'avril, navré des aberrations dont on y était témoin et bien assuré qu'il n'était possible d'y rendre aucun service à la cause de la raison. Privé de mes livres et séparé de mes travaux, j'employai ces loisirs forcés à faire un retour sur moi-même et à dresser une sorte d'état sommaire de mes croyances philosophiques. La forme du dialogue me parut bonne pour cela, parce qu'elle n'a rien de dogmatique et qu'elle permet de présenter successivement les diverses faces du problème, sans que l'on soit obligé de conclure. Moins que jamais je me sens l'audace de parler doctrinalement en pareille matière. Les trois morceaux offerts ici au public ont pour objet de présenter des séries d'idées se développant selon un ordre logique, et non d'inculquer une opinion ou de prêcher un système déterminé. Les problèmes qui y sont traités sont de ceux auxquels on pense toujours, même en sachant bien qu'on ne les résoudra jamais. Exciter à réfléchir, parfois même provoquer par certaines exagérations le sens philosophique du lecteur, voilà l'unique but que je m’y suis proposé. La dignité de l'homme n'exige pas que l'on sache faire à ces questions une réponse arrêtée ; elle exige qu'on n'y soit pas indifférent. Sonder la profondeur de l'abîme n'est donné à personne ; mais on fait preuve d'un esprit bien superficiel, si l'on ne cède à la tentation d'y plonger parfois le regard. Je connais trop les malentendus auxquels on s'expose en traitant les sujets philosophiques et religieux pour espérer que ces observations soient bien comprises. Je me résigne d'avance à ce que l'on m'attribue directement toutes les opinions professées par mes interlocuteurs, même quand elles sont contradictoires. Je n'écris que pour des lecteurs intelligents et éclairés. Ceux-là admettront parfaitement que je n'aie nulle solidarité avec mes personnages et que je ne doive porter la responsabilité d'aucune des opinions qu'ils expriment. Chacun de ces personnages représente, aux degrés divers de la certitude, de la probabilité, du rêve, les côtés successifs d'une pensée libre ; aucun d'eux n'est un pseudonyme que j'aurais choisi, selon une pratique familière aux auteurs de dialogues, pour exposer mon propre sentiment.
