Au-delà de la satisfaction affichée par les participants au programme Erasmus, l’analyse de leurs trajectoires permet de reposer la question de la stratification des systèmes éducatifs et de leur démocratisation dans un cadre européen. La première partie de cet ouvrage montre que ce programme n’a pas atteint l’objectif officiel de réciprocité des échanges. Ainsi les institutions d’enseignement supérieur européennes se structurent dans l'ordre des inégalités de prestige entre établissements et plus largement entre aires culturelles. Cet ordre affecte aussi la morphologie sociale de cette minorité statistique. Dans une université massifiée, la mobilité institutionnalisée semble être un moyen de se distinguer. La seconde partie de cet ouvrage souligne que l’accroissement des mobilités n’abolit pas les inégalités économiques et sociales en Europe. Du sud au nord, les déplacements ne sont pas investis des mêmes enjeux. La mobilité internationale est aujourd’hui de plus en plus utilisée à des fins de mobilité sociale. Mais les tenants et les aboutissants de ces expatriations ne sont pas les mêmes suivant le déplacement opéré d’un bout à l’autre de l’échelle géographique et sociale.
