Global warming and climate changes are caused due to excess emission of greenhouse gases mostly from the industries and burning of fossil fuels. At present, there is a deficit of seasonal rainfalls, increase in atmospheric temperature, rising sea levels, scarcity of water for domestic and industrial purposes. There are interstate disputes; even the Apex court finds it difficult to satisfy the agrarian community regarding the equitable distribution of water. Domestic and industrial effluents are released to the natural river courses contaminating the drinking water. Unusual and unprecedented downpour of rainfall caused by cyclonic effects leads to natural disasters such as floods and landslides. On the other end, there are drought and outbreak of diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. There is an imperative need to protect the natural reserves as per the approved norms of National Forest Policy to have a proper carbon sink for the mitigation of excess emission of greenhouse gases. Pollution is on the rise. The air and oceans are highly polluted by the presence of plastics, acids, chemicals, greenhouse gases and other elements. There are changes in the sea temperature due to El Nino and La Nina factors that cause adverse climatic conditions.

The prevailing global environmental crisis is primarily because of non-standardized parameters for environmental regulation. Unplanned expansion of economic activities, consideration for environmental conservation and several associated problems are emerging due to degradation in quality of ambient environment such as clean air, safe drinking water and quality of food, particularly in developing nations. Due to poor/casual execution of EIA protocol, newly developing countries are preferred destination for establishing pollution emitting industries, which results in degradation and depletion of natural resources. Lack of environmental policy intervention is another major attraction for establishing such industries in these nations. In order to ensure sustainable development, the highest priority issues include the monitoring and eradication of environmental problems which arise due to economic development. Initiation of any form of economic development primarily results in loss of forests and thus biodiversity, followed by deterioration in quality of air and contamination of natural resources. The worst impact of non-standardized economic development is the contamination of air, water and soil. Sustainable development ensures responsible interface with the environment to minimize the depletion or degradation of natural resources and ensure long term environmental quality. It involves integrated approaches in understanding the importance of environmental management systems and policy inventions leading to improved environmental performance. The present book is proposed to address the environmental concerns associated with economic development and approaches involved to attain sustainable economic development, which include monitoring of the quality of air, deforestation, quality of water resources, soil erosion and degradation of the natural environment.

Resources depletion refers to the situation where the consumption of natural resources is faster than it can be replenished. The natural resources of a nation can be divided as renewable resources and non renewable resources. The natural resources contribute at large to the economic development of a nation. Current patterns of energy and natural resource use, agricultural practices, and urbanization appear to be largely unsustainable and require urgent remediation. The consumption pattern of natural resources did not seem to be justifiable which can have economic downfalls for the nation. Population Explosion is acting as a catalyst for resources depletion. Consumption pattern if not addressed will lead to irreversible climate change and declined economic growth, as a result of increased social, economic, and environmental costs and decreased productivity. In order to achieve economic growth, developing countries are abusing their lands on the grounds of economic interests. Whether is in the form of air and water pollution, deforestation and soil erosion or the extraction of natural resources itself, the fact is that developing countries are currently accounting for remarkable depletion of natural resources. It seems evident that much of the economic growth activities enforced by governments, account for significant resources depletion. Additionally, developing countries remain largely dependent on exports of natural resources to generate economic dividends. Withstanding, pulling raw material from forests to fulfill exportation needs is subject to enormous domestic and international pressure, causing overexploitation of the natural resource base. Furthermore, it is highly relevant to add that the disproportional level of resources exploitation being caused due to economic policies. Resource utilization has always been part of human history; however, the acceleration of economic growth activities together with the pursuit of an urgent economic development is the core cause of resources overexploitation. In conclusion, one may argue that economic growth and associated development usually results in increased levels of resources exploitation. However, that is not to say that an inevitable consequential relationship exists between these trends. It seems evident that developing countries pursuing rapid economic growth disregard environmental concerns.
