Problems in geotechnical earthquake engineering often involve complex geometries and boundary conditions prohibiting the use of simple models. Although very useful, empirical models are sometimes not applicable to the problem at hand and performing experimental tests is costly and difficult. Improvements in computer technology have made advanced numerical modeling an essential tool for analysis and design of systems in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering. In this context, there is a need for a robust numerical framework capable of handling different aspects of the engineering problems in this field. In this study, several of these aspects for 3D dynamic finite element analysis of such engineering problems are addressed. Particularly, constitutive modeling of granular soil to capture liquefaction, and soil-pile interaction are considered and tools are developed and implemented in OpenSees to address the problem of bridge foundations subjected to liquefaction induced lateral spreading loads. Several 3D static, quasi-static and dynamic examples are included for verification and validation of the tools implemented as part of this research.

This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.

A review of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading and its effects on pile foundations has been presented. A review of currently available methods of analysis for prediction of bending moments and deflections of a single pile subjected to lateral spreading has also been conducted. The methods included in this study are: (a) Deformation method, (b) Japanese Road Association (JRA) method, (c) Limit Equilibrium method, (d) Hybrid force-deformation imposed method, and (e) Finite element method. Numerical analyses were conducted on single piles subjected to lateral spreading, using ABAQUS, based on the first four methods indicated above. The numerical analyses involved three different soil-pile configurations: (a) a two-layer soil profile without a non-liquefiable soil crust, (b) a three-layer soil profile with a non-liquefiable soil crust underlain by liquefiable soil over a dense sand, and (c) a three-layer soil profile like that of case (b) with a lateral deformation constraint at the pile head. The results were compared with a limited number of centrifuge data on single piles. The purpose was to calibrate these methods and assess their ability to capture the measured moment and deflection responses of single piles. The limit equilibrium method and the deformation-imposed method predicted the centrifuge data very well. The JRA method overpredicted both moments and pile deflections by as much as four times. Based on deformation imposed method, parametric analyses were also conducted to study the influence of: (i) the crust thickness, (ii) the liquefied layer thickness, (iii) the non-liquefied bottom layer thickness, (iv) the pile diameter, and (v) the lateral pile head deflection constraint, on pile response subjected to lateral displacements induced by soil liquefaction. The effects of these parameters on single pile response are presented.
