New and Future Development in Biopesticide Research: Biotechnological Exploration

New and Future Development in Biopesticide Research: Biotechnological Exploration PDF Author: Surajit De Mandal
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811639892
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
This book discusses different approaches for successful pest-management through biotechnological interventions. Pest management is directly associated with the agricultural productivity. The book introduces the reader to various kinds of biopesticides that have been developed and are being developed for field application. Chemical pesticides have been widely used to control pests, and these induce pesticide resistance as well as other environmental problems. This book discusses the necessity to develop alternate pest control strategies, especially environment-friendly and target-specific biopesticides against destructive pests. The book describes important aspects such as microbial biopesticides, plant-based biopesticides, natural products that act against pests and the various other biotechnological advances and limitations of these biopesticides. It provides an in-depth knowledge of the latest research and development in the area of biopesticides. This informative book is meant for students and researchers in the fields of biotechnology, agriculture and applied microbiology.

The Small Hive Beetle

The Small Hive Beetle PDF Author: Norman L. Carreck
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780860982784
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 88

Book Description
The small hive beetle Aethina tumida is native to sub-Saharan Africa, where it is not generally considered a pest. Its arrival in 1996 in the south east of the United States was unexpected, as was the devastating effect it had on colonies. It has since spread to Australia, Canada, and Mexico. An isolated incursion in Portugal, Europe in 2004 was successfully eradicated. The discovery of the beetle in south west Italy in September 2014, and subsequent continuing control efforts have brought new attention to the beetle by beekeepers, scientists and governments. This book intended for beekeepers derives from a conference organised by the COLOSS association and held at CRA-API, Bologna, Italy. In its seven chapters the world's experts on the small hive beetle discuss its biology and spread, and suggest practical ways of living with the pest.

Asian Beekeeping in the 21st Century

Asian Beekeeping in the 21st Century PDF Author: Panuwan Chantawannakul
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811082227
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
From the perspective of local scientists, this book provides insight into bees and bee management of Asia, with a special focus on honey bees. Asia is home to at least nine honey bee species, including the introduced European honey bee, Apis mellifera. Although A. mellifera and the native Asian honey bee, Apis cerana, are the most commonly employed species for commercial beekeeping, the remaining non-managed native honey bee species have important ecological and economic roles on the continent. Species distributions of most honey bee species overlap in Southeast Asia, thus promoting the potential for interspecies transmission of pests and parasites, as well as their spread to other parts of the world by human translocation. Losses of managed A. mellifera colonies is of great concern around the world, including in Asia. Such global colony losses are believed to be caused, in part, by pests and parasites originating from Asia such as the mite Varroa destructor, the microsporidian Nosema ceranae, and several bee viruses. Taking advantage of the experience of leading regional bee researchers, this book provides insight into the current situation of bees and bee management in Asia. Recent introductions of honey bee parasites of Asian origin to other parts of the world ensures that the contents of this book are broadly relevant to bee scientists, researchers, government offi cials, and the general public around the world.

Stingless Bees of Mexico

Stingless Bees of Mexico PDF Author: José Javier G. Quezada-Euán
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319777858
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
The stingless bees are the most diverse group of highly social bees and are key species in our planet’s tropical and subtropical regions, where they thrive. In Mexico, the management of stingless bees dates back centuries, and they were an essential part of the culture and cosmogony of native peoples like the Maya. In recent decades a vast amount of information has been gathered on stingless bees worldwide. This book summarizes various aspects of the biology and management of stingless bees, with special emphasis on the Mexican species and the traditions behind their cultivation. Much of the information presented here was produced by the author and the team of researchers at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán in the course of three decades of working with these insects. Given the breadth of its coverage, the book offers an equally valuable reference guide for academics, students and beekeepers alike.
