Correction Techniques in Emission Tomography

Correction Techniques in Emission Tomography PDF Author: Mohammad Dawood
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439812985
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Written by an interdisciplinary team of medical doctors, computer scientists, physicists, engineers, and mathematicians, Correction Techniques in Emission Tomography presents various correction methods used in emission tomography to generate and enhance images. It discusses the techniques from a computer science, mathematics, and physics viewpoint. The book gives a comprehensive overview of correction techniques at different levels of the data processing workflow. It covers nuclear medicine imaging, hybrid emission tomography (PET-CT, SPECT-CT, PET-MRI, PET-ultrasound), and optical imaging (fluorescence molecular tomography). It illustrates basic principles as well as recent advances, such as model-based iterative algorithms and 4D methods. An important aspect of the book is on new and sophisticated motion correction techniques in PET imaging. These techniques enable high-resolution, high-quality images, leading to better imaging analysis and image-based diagnostics. Reflecting state-of-the-art research, this volume explores the range of problems that occur in emission tomography. It looks at how the resulting images are affected and presents practical compensation methods to overcome the problems and improve the images.

Development of Scatter Reconstruction Algorithms to 3-dimensional Positron Emission Tomography

Development of Scatter Reconstruction Algorithms to 3-dimensional Positron Emission Tomography PDF Author: Mohammadreza Teimoorisichani

Book Description
In 3-dimensional positron emission tomography (PET), the proportion of the detected photon coincidences arising from scatter can be very high, up to 60%. A standard approach to scatter correction in 3D PET is to estimate the scattered coincidences and subtract them from the list of recorded events. More recently, novel techniques have been proposed in which the information carried by the scattered photons was extracted and directly used in the image reconstruction step. In this work, the algorithms were extended for use in non-TOF 3D PET systems and were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated. Despite some promising initial outcomes, standard performance metrics of images reconstructed with each technique, representing the quality of images, was shown to be deteriorated under specified conditions. Further work is required to investigate potential benefits of the proposed algorithms for both ideal and clinical conditions.

Quantification in Positron Emission Tomography

Pages : 188

Book Description
This work is focused on the development of processing, quantification and standarization methods, aimed at enhancing the quality and accuracy of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images, both for human brain studies and for high-resolution small animal studies. Firstly, the effects of scatter, reconstruction method, anatomical variability, positron range, partial volume effect and non-colinearity on the quantification of PET studies are investigated. Several correction methods for the essential degradations are presented. Finally, the suitability of Monte Carlo techniques for simulating PET studies is also assessed.

Partial-volume Correction for High-resolution Positron Emission Tomography Using Cortical Surface Information

Partial-volume Correction for High-resolution Positron Emission Tomography Using Cortical Surface Information PDF Author: Thomas Funck

Book Description
" Images from high resolution brain positron emission tomography (PET) scanners (CTI/Siemens HRRT) can measure differences in neuroreceptor concentrations in the gray matter that are related to cytoarchitectonic differences. However, the loss of resolution due to the PET imaging process results in partial-volume effects (PVE) that obscure the true radiotracer distribution. Although several partial-volume correction algorithms exist, these frequently require severely limiting assumptions. We developed a new iterative deconvolution algorithm for the partial-volume correction of PET images that aims to overcome the limitations of previous methods. The proposed method does so using two innovative techniques. One is the incorporation anatomic information from a cortical gray matter surface representation, extracted from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The second is the use of anatomically constrained smoothing to attenuate noise in the image. This method was validated using simulated and clinical data. The results show that our method consistently recovers accurate radiotracer concentrations on simulated data sets and produces similar, though slightly overestimated, results on the real clinical data when compared to the gold-standard partial-volume correction method. Quantification and Optimization Techniques for Dynamic Brian Imaging in High Resolution Positron Emission Tomography

Quantification and Optimization Techniques for Dynamic Brian Imaging in High Resolution Positron Emission Tomography PDF Author:

Book Description
Modern positron emission tomography (PET) scanners have a large number of detector crystals which corresponds to an even larger number of lines of response (LOR) addressing the coincidence events. This increasing complexity makes the image reconstruction much more challenging especially in dynamic imaging where the acquired number of counts per frame or per LOR is much less as compared to that in the static case. The low statistical quality of the data thus degrades the quantitative accuracy of the images. Moreover, the increasing number of LORs and dynamic frames requires a longer computational time and larger data storage for the image reconstruction task. A dual reconstruction scheme, a novel scatter calibration, and a practical scatter and randoms approximation methods were developed in this work. These methods have been validated using phantom, non-human primate, and human studies and have been demonstrated to improve the quantification accuracy of the images, to accelerate the image formation task, and to reduce the data storage requirement for dynamic brain imaging in high resolution PET. In conclusion, these studies contribute to increasing the accuracy and to decreasing the computational burden for dynamic high resolution quantitative PET imaging. The proposed methods are modular and can be applied to any PET scanners with the exception of the dual reconstruction scheme which requires list-mode acquisition capability. These methods are particularly beneficial for high resolution scanners which have a large number of LORs, such as the high resolution research tomograph (HRRT).

An Improved Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Reconstruction of 2D Activity Distribution Using Higher Order Scattered Data

An Improved Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Reconstruction of 2D Activity Distribution Using Higher Order Scattered Data PDF Author: Hongwei Sun

Book Description
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images reconstructed without adequate scatter corrections introduce noise and degrade image contrast. In commercial imaging systems, misalignment between computed tomography (CT) and PET images can introduce biases in the activity distribution. Recently, several reconstruction algorithms have been proposed, which made direct use of single scattered photons in the activity reconstruction. However, the realistic dataset contains single and higher order scattered photons, and current scatter reconstruction methods do not distinguish them. In this study, a novel reconstruction algorithm that is capable of processing higher order scattered photons was developed. A restricted attenuation correction method was created to avoid overcorrecting for scattered photons. The simulation outcomes have shown that the proposed methods can, under ideal energy resolution, reconstruct images that are qualitatively and quantitatively better than those obtained using existing algorithms, and that the methods show promise for use under more realistic clinical conditions.
