ISBN: 1605950009
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 490
Book Description
This book presents the foundations of the science of polymer derived ceramics, enriched with many descriptions of applications. Written by a team of selected researchers, the text is a systematic, comprehensive introduction to all phases of polymer derived ceramics from synthesis strategies through properties measurement, and applications. New material is given on the nanolevel structure of PDCs, and it is shown how nano-sized modifications can alter and improve the properties of polymer derived ceramics, including high chemical durability, oxidation resistance, luminescence, and piezo-resistivity. Groundbreaking work is also described on novel precursors such as stoichiometric SiC, BN, and SiBCN ceramics. In terms of technology, this volume explains how PDCs are fabricated and how these novel materials are used in membranes, filters, MEMS, fibers, and micro-components. This book covers: synthesis, structure, properties and applications; strategies for characterizing and synthesizing PDCs; and, original research on pre-ceramic PDC precursors.

Thin-Film Solar Cells for Space Applications
Author: National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN: 9781723902673
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 44
Book Description
The proposed work supports MURED goals by fostering research and development activities at Fisk and UTEP which contribute substantially to NASA's mission, preparing faculty and students at Fisk and UTEP to successfully participate in the conventional, competitive research and education process, and increasing the number of students to successfully complete degrees in NASA related fields. The project also addresses directly a core need of NASA for space power and is consistent with the Core Responsibilities of the John Glenn Space Center. Current orbital missions are limited by radiation from high energy particles trapped in the Van Allen Belt because that solar radiation degrades cell performance by damaging the crystalline lattice. Some potential orbits have been inaccessible because the radiation is too severe. Thin-film solar cells, if they can be adapted for use in the unfriendly space environment, could open new orbits to satellites by providing a radiation hard source of power. The manned mission to Mars requires photovoltaic devices for both the trip there and as a power supply on the surface. Solar arrays using thin films offer a low power/weight ratio solution that provides reliable photovoltaic power.Lush, Gregory B.Glenn Research CenterTHIN FILMS; SOLAR CELLS; AEROSPACE ENVIRONMENTS; PARTICLE ENERGY; RADIATION SOURCES; SOLAR RADIATION; SOLAR ARRAYS; MANNED MARS MISSIONS; TECHNOLOGY UTILIZATION; CRYSTALLINITY; LOW WEIGHT; RADIATION BELTS

Novel Ceramic Materials
Author: R. Saravanan
Publisher: Materials Research Forum LLC
ISBN: 1945291036
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 225
Book Description
The book presents a number of novel ceramic materials that have great potential for advanced technological applications, such as microwave devices, communication instruments and memory devices. The materials covered include piezoelectric ceramics, zirconia ceramics, doped NiO ceramic nanostructures, BST ceramics (Barium-Strontium-Titanates), manganite ceramics, Ce-doped LaMnO3 and Sb-doped NKN (Sodium-Potassium-Niobates), as well as materials with ferrite structures, and with multi-ferroic structures The materials were characterized experimentally by means of XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis), UV-Visible Spectroscopy, and VSM (Vibrating sample magnetometer). The results are discussed in terms of the structural characteristics of the various crystal structures, their special surface morphology, and their optical and magnetic properties. Of particular interest is the determination of the electron density distribution (on the basis of XRD data and computerized evaluations). These data elucidate the atomic/electronic structure of the materials and make us understand the specific characteristics of these novel ceramics.

Design, Processing, and Properties of Ceramic Materials from Preceramic Precursors
Author: Samuel Bernard
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781612099958
Category : Ceramic materials
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Many important industrial objectives require the development of ceramics with specific properties. It is now established that the development of ceramics demands the control of their composition at the atomic scale, as well as the nanostructuration of the materials. A nanostructural design, a control of their composition and shapes and therefore a systematic optimisation of their properties, are beyond the possibilities of the traditional high-temperature synthesis methods via solid-state reactions. This book examines the concept known as the Precursor-Derived Ceramics (PDCs) route, which offers new preparation opportunities in chemistry and ceramic sciences and plays a major role in the preparation of ceramics endowed with properties that reach far beyond those of existing materials.
