Contaminated Forests

Contaminated Forests PDF Author: Igor Linkov
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401146942
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
Concentrations of pollutants in the atmosphere have increased dramatically over the last century and many of these changes are attributable to anthropogenic activities. The influence of acid rain has been well studied, but there has been no extensive exploration of other pollutants, such as toxic chemicals, heavy metals and radionuclides. Natural ecosystems, especially forests, tend to accumulate many of these pollutants which subsequently can affect ecosystem health. These contaminants may be very damaging to the environment in Eastern Europe, where the rapid disappearance of forest is the result not only of contamination but also of poor forest management practices. The current book is designed to reduce the uncertainty in our current knowledge of forest radioecology. The three topics it embraces are (a) Modelling, (b) Measurements and Data, and (c) Countermeasures and Risk Assessment.

The Assessment of German Cultural Landscapes

The Assessment of German Cultural Landscapes PDF Author: Jessica Matloch
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658214163
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Jessica Matloch examines the importance of regional cultural landscape for their residents using the approach of willingness to pay. She identifies that almost each resident of every region prefers water landscapes. Furthermore, landscape perception is often influenced by education and by the resident’s relationship with nature. The impact of the relationship to the region differs between regions and resident groups. Regarding the involvement in or for the landscape, the results suggest that specific groups of residents are more willing to volunteer in and for regional landscapes than others. The analyses illustrate that the region is used the most to relax and the least for cultural purposes.

Book Description
Water is vital to life, maintenance of ecological balance, economic development, and sustenance of civilization. Planning and management of water resources and its optimal use are a matter of urgency for most countries of the world, and even more so for India with a huge population. Growing population and expanding economic activities exert increasing demands on water for varied needs--domestic, industrial, agricultural, power generation, navigation, recreation, etc. In India, agriculture is the highest user of water. The past three decades have witnessed numerous advances as well as have presented intriguing challenges and exciting opportunities in hydrology and water resources. Compounding them has been the growing environmental consciousness. Nowhere are these challenges more apparent than in India. As we approach the twenty first century, it is entirely fitting to take stock of what has been accomplished and what remains to be accomplished, and what accomplishments are relevant, with particular reference to Indian conditions.

Ecosystem services assessment in selected agricultural lands in Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya districts of Sri Lanka PDF Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.

Pages : 94

Book Description
The Rehabilitation of Degraded Agricultural Lands (RDAL) project by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), in partnership with the Government of Sri Lanka through the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment (MMDE), aims to encourage the use of sustainable land management practices in agricultural lands in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s role in this project involves developing innovative financing mechanisms to promote Sustainable Land Management (SLM). In order to achieve this, IUCN has formulated an approach which is laid out in this report the Ecosystem Services Assessment in Selected Agricultural Lands in Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya Districts of Sri Lanka The objective of this report is to assess the ecosystem services of agricultural landscapes in the three districts (project area) Kandy, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya. By identifying the ecosystem services generated and assessing current land management practices. A rapid assessment was conducted to assess the adoption of sustainable land management practices of four agricultural land use types, identify and map the associated ecosystem services, and utilize existing frameworks and databases to quantify the ecosystem service values. A generalized valuation highlights that these ecosystem services have significant value for both society and for farmers and landowners. Therefore, identifying and implementing mechanisms to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable land management practices on their farmlands can generate both private and public values.
