Dynamic Pressure Sensors for Hypersonic Flow Measurements

Dynamic Pressure Sensors for Hypersonic Flow Measurements PDF Author: Yoonho Seo (Ph. D.)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
This Ph.D. dissertation will focus on the research and development of an acoustic pressure sensor tailored for hypersonic boundary layer flow measurements. Hypersonic boundary layer flows comprise shocks, laminar-to-turbulent transitions, and high-frequency turbulence with small (sub 1-mm) characteristic length scales. Non-invasive acoustic pressure measurements at the walls of such flows offer useful diagnostics and are desired by the hypersonic community. The desired sensor specification are as follows: operation up to 1,000-K temperature, 0.5-MHz bandwidth, and sensing elements spanning less than 1 mm. The chosen embodiment is a piezoelectric sensor employing AlN as the sensing material. Preliminary prototypes have been micromachined at the UT MRC. These sensors are comprised of diaphragms with 500-μm diameter and 2-μm thickness. The sensors have been packaged into a cylindrical form factor with 0.25-inch diameter for mounting in hypersonic test-tunnel facilities. The dissertation will focus on the rigorous performance characterization of these sensors, the exploration of an array embodiment to enable pressure gradient measurements, and sensor design and characterization at elevated temperatures

Additive Manufacturing with Functionalized Nanomaterials

Additive Manufacturing with Functionalized Nanomaterials PDF Author: Sunpreet Singh
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128231521
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
The greatest benefits of nanoscale additive manufacturing lie in biomedicine, smart devices/sensors, energy harvesting, aerospace, and manufacturing. This book explores the recent applications of functionalized nanomaterials-based additive manufacturing to benefit different manufacturing domains, including design and process aspects, as well as outlining major application areas. This book summarizes recent progress of functionalized nanomaterials-based additive manufacturing on both an experimental and a theoretical model level. Though nanomaterials can be fabricated by bottom-up and top-down approaches (techniques include lithography, photolithography, and micro-machining), the applications of additive manufacturing processes are increasing at an exponential rate and therefore, the demand for high-performance materials has been greatly increasing. Recent applications covered in this book include biomedicine, aerospace, automobile, waste recycling, and energy storage devices. Environmental, regulatory and safety issues are also discussed. This book is an important reference source for materials scientists and engineers who are seeking to improve their understanding of how functionalized nanomaterials are playing an increasingly important role in the additive manufacturing process. Brings together recent innovations and practices of nanomaterials in additive manufacturing processes Outlines major nanomaterials-based additive manufacturing techniques Discusses major applications in a range of industry sectors, including in energy, automotive and biomedicine

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials PDF Author: Committee on New Sensor Technologies: Materials and Applications
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309587433
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.
