Beryllium Ingot Sheet

Beryllium Ingot Sheet PDF Author: Stanley W. Porembka

Book Description
This memorandum deals with the fabrication of beryllium ingot sheet. Until recently, most beryllium products have been fabricated from hot-pressed powder materials. As a result of the development of sound castings of beryllium of sufficient size, beryllium ingot sheet can now be made. The greatest advantage of sheet from cast ingots as compared with sheet from pressed powder is increased formability. However, ingot sheet has lower strength, and work is underway to improve the strength without serious loss of fabricability. The purpose of this summary is to review the casting and fabrication procedures for beryllium ingot and the resulting properties of sheet materials. (Author).

Book Description
Beryllium casting is a relatively new technology with the successful cast of large ingots being developed during the last decade. In 1961, Rocky Flats initiated a beryllium ingot-sheet fabrication process that included the development of new techniques to consistently cast large sound beryllium ingots. This report reviews the casting technology that was developed to cast these beryllium ingots on a production basis along with some of the remaining technical problems requiring additional development work.

Investigation Including a Testing Program to Study and Develop Methods for Improving Ductility of Beryllium

Investigation Including a Testing Program to Study and Develop Methods for Improving Ductility of Beryllium PDF Author: James E. Hanafee

Book Description
A new technique for deforming ingot beryllium into sheet form was found. This technique was used to roll beryllium up to 96% at 300C and roll and upset between 80% to 90% at 200C without intermediate annealing. The recovery and recrystallization characteristics of the beryllium sheet were determined. It was found that the ingot beryllium rolled 96% began recovery below 400C while similar beryllium sheet deformed to 85% began recovery in the 500C region. Both temperatures are well below typical commercial fabrication temperatures and these low temperatures reflected the large amount of stored energy in the beryllium sheet. This resulted in a finer microstructure which in turn resulted in significantly higher mechanical properties, particularly bend ductility. The new fabrication technique was used to make polycrystalline high purity (6 zone pass and 12 zone pass) beryllium sheet. Evidence was found that twinning contributed to the sheet making deformation process in the high purity beryllium sheet. The recovery and recrystallization behavior of this sheet was determined and it appears quite feasible to make fine grain high purity ingot beryllium sheet. (Author).

Beryllium Chemistry and Processing

Beryllium Chemistry and Processing PDF Author: Kenneth A. Walsh
Publisher: ASM International
ISBN: 0871707217
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 592

Book Description
This book introduces beryllium; its history, its chemical, mechanical, and physical properties including nuclear properties. The 29 chapters include the mineralogy of beryllium and the preferred global sources of ore bodies. The identification and specifics of the industrial metallurgical processes used to form oxide from the ore and then metal from the oxide are thoroughly described. The special features of beryllium chemistry are introduced, including analytical chemical practices. Beryllium compounds of industrial interest are identified and discussed. Alloying, casting, powder processing, forming, metal removal, joining and other manufacturing processes are covered. The effect of composition and process on the mechanical and physical properties of beryllium alloys assists the reader in material selection. The physical metallurgy chapter brings conformity between chemical and physical metallurgical processing of beryllium, metal, alloys, and compounds. The environmental degradation of beryllium and its alloys both in aqueous and high temperature condition are presented. The health and environmental issues are thoroughly presented the current requirements and established practices for handling beryllium in the workplace are available. A thorough list of references will assist the user of this book.

The Influence of Grain Refinement and Titanium Alloying Additions on the Mechanical Properties of Beryllium Ingot Sheet

The Influence of Grain Refinement and Titanium Alloying Additions on the Mechanical Properties of Beryllium Ingot Sheet PDF Author: W. Taylor

Book Description
Beryllium ingot sheets having grain sizes as low as 8 microns were made by pack rolling and pack extrusion techniques. Tensile and three point bend properties of these sheets were compared with warm-rolled monolithic ingot sheet. Clear improvements in tensile properties were achieved (65 ksi UTS, 40 ksi Y.S., 23% elongation) in fully recrystallized material, but these improvements were made at the expense of formability. The pack extrusion technique showed promise in achieving grain refinement while restraining texture development. Sheet was also produced from a Be-1% Ti alloy. The alloy demonstrated marked grain refinement compared to unalloyed ingot beryllium; this led to improved tensile properties, but reduced formability was again observed. The ability of titanium beryllide particles to impede dislocation movement was demonstrated, but particle sizes and distributions suitable for dispersion strengthening were not achieved in spite of considerable hot and warm working of the alloy.
