Munich's Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1808, became one of the most important institutions In Europe for training artists in the second half of the 19th century. The Academy attracted students from across Europe, and the United States. This volume examines the ?Munich school, ? its development and influence, the migration of its style and the effect art students have on their surroundings. This edited collection explores the intersection of historical studies and the artistic representation of the past in the long nineteenth century. The case studies provide not just an account of the pursuit of history in art within Western Europe but also examples from beyond that sphere.
