Handbook of Precast Segmental Tunnel Lining Systems

Handbook of Precast Segmental Tunnel Lining Systems PDF Author: Verya Nasri
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1040040020
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 855

Book Description
This comprehensive handbook covers all aspects of design, production, and construction of precast concrete tunnel segmental lining, with the best practices in the field included in one book for the first time. New and current design methods and quantitative analyses are considered in line with ACI and ASTM codes, as well as a full selection of global standards for the reliable design of the product and all components. Also incorporated are new applications of science and technology, such as new admixtures, and the latest manufacturing processes and precisions, such as tight dimensional controls and high repeatability cycles. With detailed guidance from world-leading practitioners, this is the definitive international technical and practical manual on these linings, forming a one-stop reference for tunnel engineers and an invaluable resource for advanced students in civil, mechanical, and mining engineering.

Underground Structures

Underground Structures PDF Author: R.S. Sinha
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444599029
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 501

Book Description
This book presents the most up to date information relevant to the design and instrumentation of underground structures. The structure might be a tunnel, shaft, cavern, or pressure unit, or a combination thereof. Empirical, rational, numerical, convergence and confinement, and discontinuity analysis methods are treated comprehensively. Special chapters are devoted to underground structures in rock burst, swelling, squeezing, and seismic zones. Water control, instrumentation, and tunneling through soft ground are also treated extensively. Sections on the design of pressure tunnels, shafts, caverns, shotcreting, water control, and soft ground tunnels are informative and authoritative. Worked examples are included on the design of rock tunnels, soft ground tunnels, and the treatment of underground structures through difficult ground. Extensive references are provided, and figures, sketches and photographs aid presentation. Important tables on planning, and case histories, allow the reader to build confidence in his design of underground structures. The book will be beneficial to civil, structural, geotechnical and mining engineers, geologists, and planners and managers associated with the design and construction of underground structures.

Reliability-based Design of Tunnel Support Systems

Reliability-based Design of Tunnel Support Systems PDF Author: Shigeyuki Kohno
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Tunneling
Languages : en
Pages : 532

Book Description
Recent developments of tunnelling technology have led to the construction of many tunnels, not only in rural areas, but also in cities. In particular, tunnel construction in cities requires very high standards of safety, since failure can cause the loss of many human lives as well as damage of properties. Despite the recent advances in the development of tunnelling methods, it is still difficult to predict the exact properties of the ground where the tunnels are planned to be constructed, due to large uncertainties. Designs that do not take into account the effect of uncertainties could be subject to large error. Consequently, it is very important that uncertainties be accounted for properly in design. The objective of this study is to propose the use of probabilistic methods to study the effect of uncertainties in the exploration phase, design phase and construction phase of a tunnel project. The outline for each phase is as follows: (1) Exploration phase. Prior to design, rock profiles at a planned site is probabilistically evaluated, based on the information of local experts and borings. (2) Design phase. The reliability of the tunnel supports in soft rock is first examined. The effects of the creep of the rock and bending moment of the lining on the reliability are also evaluated. Next, reliability of the lining in a jointed hard rock is evaluated by first-order second-moment method, based on the distributions of the geometrical properties of the joints. The effect of blasting on the reliability is also examined by linear elastic fracture mechanics. (3) Construction phase. The probabilistic method is presented to predict the long-term deformation of the opening surface during construction. Bayesian approach is used to update the accuracy of the prediction, based on the observed deformation. The reliability of the lining is re-evaluated on the basis of the updated long-term deformation.
