The significance of this research and development effort to the Air Force is the evaluation of diode phase shifters with associated radiating element, driver and memory electronics as they are designed for steering an airborne phased array antenna. The complete network was designed and tested as it might be deployed with a slide-in honeycomb antenna assembly. Results are described for two basic circuit approaches using alumina and teflon glass stripline circuit media. Superior performance and manufacturing ability was experienced with the teflon-glass circuit. Further advantage could be gained by (1) designing a reduced weight device (below 1 ounce) to better approach the goal of a useful antenna element and, (2) develop suitable diode passivation means so that complete hermetic sealing of the circuit is unnecessary, and (3) reduct the average insertion loss (to below 1.5 dB) to minimize the reduction of antenna range resulting with the diode phaser steering technique.
