Design and Implementation of a Graphical User Interface for a Multimedia Database Management System

Design and Implementation of a Graphical User Interface for a Multimedia Database Management System PDF Author:

Pages : 135

Book Description
The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

Applied Software Architecture

Applied Software Architecture PDF Author: Christine Hofmeister
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional
ISBN: 9780201325713
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
"Designing a large software system is an extremely complicated undertaking that requires juggling differing perspectives and differing goals, and evaluating differing options. Applied Software Architecture is the best book yet that gives guidance as to how to sort out and organize the conflicting pressures and produce a successful design." -- Len Bass, author of Software Architecture in Practice. Quality software architecture design has always been important, but in today's fast-paced, rapidly changing, and complex development environment, it is essential. A solid, well-thought-out design helps to manage complexity, to resolve trade-offs among conflicting requirements, and, in general, to bring quality software to market in a more timely fashion. Applied Software Architecture provides practical guidelines and techniques for producing quality software designs. It gives an overview of software architecture basics and a detailed guide to architecture design tasks, focusing on four fundamental views of architecture--conceptual, module, execution, and code. Through four real-life case studies, this book reveals the insights and best practices of the most skilled software architects in designing software architecture. These case studies, written with the masters who created them, demonstrate how the book's concepts and techniques are embodied in state-of-the-art architecture design. You will learn how to: create designs flexible enough to incorporate tomorrow's technology; use architecture as the basis for meeting performance, modifiability, reliability, and safety requirements; determine priorities among conflicting requirements and arrive at a successful solution; and use software architecture to help integrate system components. Anyone involved in software architecture will find this book a valuable compendium of best practices and an insightful look at the critical role of architecture in software development. 0201325713B07092001

Design and Implementation of a Prototype Graphical User Interface for a Model Management System

Design and Implementation of a Prototype Graphical User Interface for a Model Management System PDF Author: Marvin Abram Wyant
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Management
Languages : en
Pages : 99

Book Description
The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a prototype graphical user interface for a structured model management system. The program is written for an IBM PC using Lattice-C, the Halo graphics package, and the ORACLE DBMS. Design and Implementation issues are discussed and evaluated. Future enhancements to the program and a recommendation as to the disposition of the prototype are also included. A brief explanation of structured modeling is presented. An example problem is used to illustrate the various model representation of structured modeling from a database representation. The results of this thesis show that the prototype design methodology is an excellent supplement to the traditional life-cycle design methodology. The implications of this observation are discussed in relationship to the graphical user interface program. Keywords: Structured models; Model management system; MMS; User interface; Prototype; Graphics; System design; Database. (jes).
