Scramjets

Scramjets PDF Author: Mostafa Barzegar Gerdroodbary
Publisher: Butterworth-Heinemann
ISBN: 0128211407
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Scramjet engines are a type of jet engine and rely on the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer to produce thrust. While scramjets are conceptually simple, actual implementation is limited by extreme technical challenges. Hypersonic flight within the atmosphere generates immense drag, and temperatures found on the aircraft and within the engine can be much greater than that of the surrounding air. Maintaining combustion in the supersonic flow presents additional challenges, as the fuel must be injected, mixed, ignited, and burned within milliseconds. Fuel mixing, along with the configuration and positioning of the injectors and the boundary conditions, play a key role in combustion efficiency. Scramjets: Fuel Mixing and Injection Systems discusses how fuel mixing efficiency and the advantage of injection systems can enhance the performance of the scramjets. The book begins with the introduction of the supersonic combustion chamber and explains the main parameters on the mixing rate. The configuration of scramjets is then introduced with special emphasis on the main effective parameters on the mixing of fuel inside the scramjets. In addition, basic concepts and principles on the mixing rate and fuel distribution within scramjets are presented. Main effective parameters such as range of fuel concentration for the efficient combustion, pressure of fuel jet and various arrangement of jet injections are also explained. This book is for aeronautical and mechanical engineers as well as those working in supersonic combustion who need to know the effects of compressibility on combustion, of shocks on mixing and on chemical reactions, and vorticity on the flame anchoring. Explains the main applicable approaches for enhancement of supersonic combustion engines and the new techniques of fuel injection Shows how the interaction of main air stream with fuel injections can develop the mixing inside the scramjets Presents results of numerical simulations and how they can be used for the development of the combustion engines

Unsteady Supersonic Combustion

Unsteady Supersonic Combustion PDF Author: Mingbo Sun
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811535957
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
This book describes the unsteady phenomena needed to understand supersonic combustion. Following an initial chapter that introduces readers to the basic concepts in and classical studies on unsteady supersonic combustion, the book highlights recent studies on unsteady phenomena, which offer insights on e.g. interactions between acoustic waves and flames, flow dominating instability, ignition instability, flame flashback, and near-blowout-limit combustion. In turn, the book discusses in detail the fundamental mechanisms of these phenomena, and puts forward practical suggestions for future scramjet design.

A Numerical Study of Mixing in Supersonic Combustors with Hypermixing Injectors

Book Description
A numerical study was conducted to evaluate the performance of wall mounted fuel-injectors designed for potential Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (SCRAM-jet) engine applications. The focus of this investigation was to numerically simulate existing combustor designs for the purpose of validating the numerical technique and the physical models developed. Three different injector designs of varying complexity were studied to fully understand the computational implications involved in accurate predictions. A dual transverse injection system and two streamwise injector designs were studied. The streamwise injectors were designed with swept ramps to enhance fuel-air mixing and combustion characteristics at supersonic speeds without the large flow blockage and drag contribution of the transverse injection system. For this study, the Mass-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the chemical species continuity equations were solved. The computations were performed using a finite-volume implicit numerical technique and multiple block structured grid system. The interfaces of the multiple block structured grid systems were numerically resolved using the flux-conservative technique. Detailed comparisons between the computations and existing experimental data are presented. These comparisons show that numerical predictions are in agreement with the experimental data. These comparisons also show that a number of turbulence model improvements are needed for accurate combustor flowfield predictions. Lee, J. Unspecified Center RTOP 505-62-40...

Supersonic Combustion Studies at Low Density Conditions

Supersonic Combustion Studies at Low Density Conditions PDF Author: James E. Drewry

Pages : 17

Book Description
An investigation of supersonic combustion as related to propulsive systems for high Mach number, high altitude flight is described. A method of laboratory simulation is employed which is considered to be suitable for fundamental studies of diffusional-controlled supersonic combustion under conditions approaching those of actual flight. A numerical analysis of the mixing and combustion processes for an axisymmetric hydrogen-air ducted flow system was carried out, using a computer code based upon boundary layer concepts and including the effects of finite-rate chemistry. A limited parametric study of the combustor flow field was made for a Mach number range of 1.5 to 2.5 for the injected air stream. Hydrogen injection is central and parallel to the air stream and is assumed to occur sonically. A matched pressure condition between the fuel and air streams is assumed to exist at the combustor inlet. Inlet static pressures in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 atmospheres were considered. Results of the parametric study indicated the inlet conditions required to achieve auto-ignition within a reasonable combustor length. Based on the numerical data obtained, a mixing and combustion chamber was designed and fabricated for the performance of experimental tests under conditions closely matching those of the numerical study. Experimental data from a number of laboratory tests in which supersonic combustion was obtained are presented and discussed. (Author).
