Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in Germany and Ohio.

This innovative study explores the remarkable four-hundred-year-old tradition of Hutterite songs. The author traces the origins of Hutterites' sacred songs from the time the earliest Anabaptists began writing them. These songs have been aurally/orally transmitted and sung in unison since that time. The primary song book of the Hutterites, Die Lieder der Hutterischen Brüder, contains words to songs, primarily by Hutterites, which were written to a variety of melodies. The melodies range from medieval liturgical chant, court songs, sacred and secular folk songs, to the hymns emanating from the various churches after the Reformation. Many of these melodies are being sung today only by the Hutterites. This study, begun in the 1960s, captures a tradition which is now being threatened by the fact that many Hutterites are beginning to sing four part music of the classical tradition and to play musical instruments, as well as furthering their education outside of the colonies.

The Harmonia Sacra is a hymn book of renown. In 1832 a Mennonite named Joseph Funk published a songbook that had a profound influence on Mennonite singing for generations. Its name, Genuine Church Music, indicated the compiler's intention that the contents be songs that, in his words, have stood the test of time and survived the changes of fashion. Its distinctively shaped notes of the fasola system linked it with dozens of songbooks published in America at the time to encourage musical literacy. The variety of musical content, ranging from simple psalm tunes and American folk melodies to complex early American anthems, offered ideal materials for singing schools. The Harmonia Sacra is still used in old folks' all-day singings in Rockingham and adjacent areas. Bsrbara Ebersol (1846-1922) was born in Pennsylvania to Christian Ebersol, Jr. (1814-1890) and Elizabeth Stoltzfus (1814-1892). She was the fifth of ten children. Her father had emigrated from France when he was still young. He had lived for a number of years in Ontario, Canada before settling in Pennsylvania. Barbara was a dwarf and never married; neither did four of her siblings. They remained on the Ebersol farm where she became well-known for her fraktur book- plates.
