John Hansel (ca. 1805-1883), son of Philip Hansel and Hanna Clapsaddle, was born probably at Frostburg, Maryland. The Hansel family emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania, moved on to Maryland, Virginia and then to Iowa. John Hansel married Mary M. Eckhart (1801-1893), daughter of John and Mary Ann Eckhart, 1826 in Allegany Co., Maryland. She was also born at Frostburg, Md. They were parents of eight children. Five of them were born at Frostburg, two in Monongalia Co., Va. (W.Va.), and the youngest in Clayton Co., Iowa. In 1851 family sold their land in Maryland and moved to Clayton County, Iowa. Johann Lorentz Hentzel (b. ca. 1700), the emigrant, came from Germany and by 1754 was living in Bern Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Alexander Milne (1813-1897), a Scottish immigrant and a taylor by trade, came to Clayton Co., Iowa in 1864. His wife Patience Jackson (1814-1880), a widow, was born in Rome, New York. Both died in Waterloo, Iowa.
