Derivation of New Readability Formulas (Automated Readability Index, Fog Count and Flesch Reading Ease Formula) for Navy Enlisted Personnel

Derivation of New Readability Formulas (Automated Readability Index, Fog Count and Flesch Reading Ease Formula) for Navy Enlisted Personnel PDF Author: J. Peter Kincaid
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Readability (Literary style)
Languages : en
Pages : 49

Book Description
Three readability formulas were recalculated to be more suitable for Navy use. The three formulas are the Automated Readability Index (ARI), Fog Count, and Flesch Reading Ease Formula. They were derived from test results of 531 Navy enlisted personnel enrolled in four technical training schools. Personnel were tested for their reading comprehension level according to the comprehension section of the Gates-McGinitie reading test. At the same time, they were tested for their comprehension of 18 passages taken from Rate Training Manuals. Scores on the reading test and training material passages allowed the calculation of the grade level of the passages. This scaled reading grade level is based on Navy personnel reading Navy training material and comprehending it.

Automated Readability Index

Automated Readability Index PDF Author: E. A. Smith

Pages : 20

Book Description
"Inasmuch as the utility of technical manuals is influenced to a marked extent by their reading difficulty or readability, the Automated Readability Index was devised to provide an easy, automated method of collecting data from which textual material can be evaluated in terms of readability. Whereas most readability formulas include separate factors related to (1) word difficulty and (2) sentence difficulty, the Automated Readability Index provides for the mechanical tabulation of the required data on passages as they are typed on a standard typewriter. Impulses from the typewriter activate counters which record the number of letters, words and sentences contained in the passage. From this, the average word length and average sentence length are computed. Appropriate weightings of these factors result in an index reflecting the readability of the passage. This index is in close agreement with other indexes of readability."--Abstract.

Translation in Transition

Translation in Transition PDF Author: Arnt Lykke Jakobsen
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027265372
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Translation practice and workflows have witnessed significant changes during the last decade. New market demands to handle digital content as well as technological advances are leading this transition. The development and integration of machine translation systems have given post-editing practices a reason to be in the context of professional translation services. Translators may still work from a source text, but more often than not they are presented with already translated text involving different degrees of translation automation. This scenario radically changes the cognitive demands of translation. Technological development has inevitably influenced the translation research agenda as well. It has provided new means of penetrating deeper into the cognitive processes that make translation possible and has endorsed new concepts and theories to understand the translation process. Computational analysis of eye movements and keystroke behaviour provides us with new insights into translational reading, processes of literality, effects of directionality, similarities between inter- and intralingual translation, as well as the effects of post-editing on cognitive processes and on the quality of the final outcome. All of these themes are explored in-depth in the articles in this volume which presents new and valuable insights to anyone interested in what is currently happening in empirical, process-oriented translation research.
