Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia, has as its national motto "e;Unity in Diversity."e; In 2010, Indonesia stood as the world's fourth most populous country after China, India and the United States, with 237.6 million people. This archipelagic country contributed 3.5 per cent to the world's population in the same year. The country's demographic and political transitions have resulted in an emerging need to better understand the ethnic composition of Indonesia. This book aims to contribute to that need. It is a demographic study on ethnicity, mostly relying on the tabulation provided by the BPS (Badan Pusat Statistik; Statistics-Indonesia) based on the complete data set of the 2010 population census. The information on ethnicity was collected for 236,728,379 individuals, a huge data set. The book has four objectives: To produce a new comprehensive classification of ethnic groups to better capture the rich diversity of ethnicity in Indonesia; to report on the ethnic composition in Indonesia and in each of the thirty three provinces using the new classification; to evaluate the dynamics of the fifteen largest ethnic groups in Indonesia during 2000-2010; and to examine the religions and languages of each of the fifteen largest ethnic groups.

These five countries monographs, stemming from a regional research project on "Culture and fertility in Southeast Asia", initiated by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, aim at bridging a gap in the study of relationship between ethnicity and fertility in the region. Developed on essentially the same lines, each monograph presents in turn the individual country's historical background leading to the present social structure; the patterns of intergroup behaviour; population policies and family planning programmes; the development of the demographic structure; and finally an analysis of available secondary data, using multiple classification analysis, to determine the impact of key variables on fertility patterns. Though each is an entity in itself, the five monographs complement one another and taken together provide a useful background for future research in the field.

Indonesian Electoral Behaviour

Indonesian Electoral Behaviour PDF Author: Aris Ananta
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
ISBN: 9812302247
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 464

Book Description
In Indonesias plural society, ethnicity and religion are often considered as two important independent variables to explain electoral behaviour. Many writers have used qualitative methods to relate the performance of political parties in terms of ethnicity and religion. This book questions these assumptions by looking at up-to-date data on the 1999 election and the 2000 population census. The authors, researchers from the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, statistically examine the strength of the impact of religious and ethnic variables relative to those of socio-economic variables (education, per capita income, migration, urbanization, and poverty) on the electoral behaviour of the seven major political parties. Their analysis and findings, together with detailed population profiles in terms of religion, ethnicity and socio-economic conditions at the provincial and district levels, throws light on not only the 1999 election but also the forthcoming 2004 election and beyond.

Contentious Belonging

Contentious Belonging PDF Author: Greg Fealy
Publisher: ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute
ISBN: 9814843490
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Contention has surrounded the status of minorities throughout Indonesian history. Two broad polarities are evident: one inclusive of minorities, regarding them as part of the nation’s rich complexity and a manifestation of its “Unity in Diversity” motto; the other exclusive, viewing with suspicion or disdain those communities or groups that differ from the perceived majority. State and community attitudes towards minorities have fluctuated over time. Some periods have been notable for the acceptance of minorities and protection of their rights, while others have been marked by anti-minority discrimination, marginalisation and sometimes violence. This book explores the complex historical and contemporary dimensions of Indonesia’s religious, ethnic, LGBT and disability minorities from a range of perspectives, including historical, legal, political, cultural, discursive and social. It addresses fundamental questions about Indonesia’s tolerance and acceptance of difference, and examines the extent to which diversity is embraced or suppressed.
