Book Description
When we are not able to understand or manage what we feel, we are in emotional chaos. Our capacity for reason, emotion, and action disappears; our interior coherence disappears, and we lose control, get sick, suffer, and make others suffer. On the other hand, inner peace is more than just the absence of conflict or concern: it's the return to balance, to feeling complete, to harmony with life and everything in it. There are various reasons why we can become victims of our own emotions. But there is a safe and easy path that dissolves the emotional chaos, heals our hearts, and brings the lost peace back to us, allowing us to become the person that we can really be. Various chapters describe many emotional disorders with examples of cases solved and provide the reader with a methodology that is easy to apply and effective.

Book Description
In Evil Hour is the thrilling story about the smears, defamations, infidelities, and torrential rains that afflict a small Colombian town, and the sacrifice of a boy that brings torment and chaos to an end, from the masterful Gabriel García Márquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera. One morning, slanderous posters start appearing all over the town, revealing family secrets and maligning individuals. Ghosts of the past reappear, along with old feuds and infidelities. Torrential rains then flood the town and chaos is everywhere. Neighbors suspect each other, yet no one knows who is responsible. Finally, a boy is made the scapegoat and tragedy ensues. Biodiversity

Biodiversity PDF Author: N. Biedinger
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 366206071X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 425

Book Description
Biodiversity, sometimes simply understood as "diversity of species", is a specific quality of life on our planet, the dimensions and importance of which have just lately been fully realized. Today we know that "biological diversity is a global asset of incalculable value to present and future generations" (Kofi Annan). Biodiversity is spread unequally over the world: in fact, the main share of biological resources worldwide is harboured predominantly by the so-called developing countries in the tropics and sub tropics. Therefore, Biodiversity - A Challenge for Development Research and Policy was chosen as the title for an international conference which was held in Bonn in 1997 as one of the first major events organized by the then newly established North-South Centre for Development Research (ZEF) at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat Bonn (Germany). Since the ZEF, founded by the Senate of the University of Bonn in 1995, has played a central role in turning Bonn into a centre for international cooperation and North-South dialogue. The Centre is a product of the Bonn Berlin agreement of July 1994 which was adopted to offset the effects caused by the Parliament and much of the Government moving to Berlin. It fits in well with the double strategy to strengthen Bonn's position as an interna tional science arena and as an eminent place for development policy and the national and supranational agencies dealing with this issue.

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality

World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality PDF Author: Gesine Müller
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110641135
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 246

Book Description
From today’s vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization. Departing basically (but not exclusively) from different examples of Latin American literatures and cultures in globalized contexts, this volume provides innovative insights into critical readings of World Literature and its related conceptualizations. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a mustread for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.

The Comedy of Entropy

The Comedy of Entropy PDF Author: Patrick O'Neill
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
Entropic comedy is the phrase coined by Patrick O'Neill in this study to identify a particular mode of twentieth-century narrative that is not generally recognized. He describes it as the narrative expression of forms of decentred humour, or what might more loosely be called 'black humour.' O'Neill begins his investigation by examining the rise of an essentially new form of humour over the last three hundred years or so in the context of a rapid decay of confidence in traditional authoritative value systems. O'Neill analyses the resulting reorganization of the spectrum of humour, and examines th implications of this for the ways in which we read texts and the world we live in. He then turns from intellectual history to narratology and considers the relationship, in theoretical terms, of homour, play, and narrative as systems of discourse and the role of the reader as a textualizing agent. Finally, he considers some dozen twentieth-century narratives in French, German, and English (with occasional reference to other literatures) in the context of those historical and theoretical concerns. Authors of the texts analysed include Céline, Camus, Satre, and Robbe-Grillet in French; Heller, Beckett, Pynchon, Nabokov, and Joyce in English; Grass, Kafka, and Handke in German. The analyses proceed along lines suggested by structuralist, semiotic, and post-structuraist narrative and literary theory. From his analyses of these works O'Neill concludes they illustrate in narrative terms a mode of modern writing definable as entropic comedy, and he develops a taxonomy of the mode.

Greeting Flannery O'Connor at the Back Door of My Mind

Greeting Flannery O'Connor at the Back Door of My Mind PDF Author: Aberjhani
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 9781716684814
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
How does anyone greet an iconic author--like Flannery O'Connor, James Alan McPherson, or John Berendt--at the back door of his or her mind? Is such a thing even possible? Maybe it is when the voice of such an author no longer restricts itself to a printed page. Instead, adopting the form of searches for answers to troubling questions, longings for more engaged connections, or the sudden manifestation of an unexpected dialogue, it takes up residence in a particular life. For more than one demographic of America's diverse populations, back doors were once synonymous with emblems of racial, economic, and political oppression in their most cutting conspicuous forms. They stood alongside crosses burning with flames of hatred as opposed to crosses gleaming with messages of love or redemption, with "Whites Only" and "Coloreds" signs attached to public restrooms and water fountains, seats at the backs of buses and trains or up in balconies of theaters, segregated beaches, pamphlets on eugenics, and "strange fruit" (as Billie Holiday sang of lynched bodies) hanging from southern trees. The back door as it is approached, entered, and exited in the pages of Greeting Flannery O'Connor at the Back Door of My Mind represents points in time, places in space, and regions of spirit where sensibilities of an uncanny nature either collide or converge. The results are the kind which continue to increase literature's indispensable value as it pertains to specific communities and the world at large, providing solace and shelter during the best of times and the worst.
