A sound and more modern Eurocode-based approach to design is the global approach, where the structures are considered as whole units, rather than to use traditional element-based design procedures. Although large frameworks and even whole buildings are now routinely analysed using computer packages, structural engineers do not always understand complex three-dimensional behaviour and thus manipulate the stiffness and the location of the bracing units to achieve an optimum structural arrangement. This guide deals with two categories of multi-storey structures. It can be used for the plane stress, stability and frequency analysis of individual bracing units such as frameworks, coupled shear walls and cores. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, it can be used for the three dimensional stress, stability and frequency analysis of whole buildings consisting of such bracing units. The closed-form solutions in the book may also prove to be useful at the preliminary design stage when quick checks are needed with different structural arrangements. Their usefulness cannot be overemphasized for checking the results of a finite element (computer-based) analysis when the input procedure involves tens of thousands of items of data and where mishandling one item of data may have catastrophic consequences. In addition to the critical load, the fundamental frequency, the maximum stresses and the top deflection of frameworks, coupled shear walls, cores and their spatial assemblies, a very important new piece of information is the "safety factor" of the structure (either a single unit or a whole building), which also acts as the performance indicator of the structure. The book explains sound insulation in buildings at a level suitable for both graduate students and expert consultants. Theoretical models are set out for sound transmission in buildings, with an emphasis on thick and heavy constructions. Thus, the description is not restrained by the common assumption of bending waves which is characteristic of thin plates, only. A general description is provided, with the modal density in the structures as a key parameter. At low frequencies statistical energy analysis is replaced by modal energy analysis. Sound transmission through windows and facades is represented by a model that allows any angle on incidence, including the special case of grazing incidence. One chapter is devoted to the subjective evaluation of sound insulation, particularly noise from neighbours, and how this can be applied in a sound classification scheme for dwellings. Measurement methods in building acoustics are presented with emphasis on modern methods using MLS signals or sine sweeps. The analysis and estimation of measurement uncertainty is discussed in detail. In a final chapter examples of experimental buildings with high sound insulation are explained.

Mineral building materials and regionally related methods of processing are an essential part of building culture throughout the Himalayas. Based on transregional knowledge transfer, raw materials have been able to find an ecologically and economically optimised destiny in particular local applications. For this study, samples were collected as raw material or originated from certain building components. Samples were analysed according to their material properties and architectural application. Traditional building techniques were examined and their correlation with traceable material qualities studied. Clay-specific properties such as colour, grain size distribution, grain shape, hardness, plasticity, organic additives, or bulk and clay mineral properties were used as comparative parameters. This study gives fresh insight into the interaction between technical requirements, environmental resources and material implementation.
