Attracting the Aerospace and Defense Industry

Attracting the Aerospace and Defense Industry PDF Author: Madison Souter

Book Description
As a new growing city in Southern California, Menifee is looking to attract new businesses to their city to expand their employment opportunities for their residents, expand their tax base, and build a resilient economy. Based on this commitment to their residents, Menifee established a growing need for the Aerospace and Defense Industry in their city. This report combines quantitative and qualitative data to analyze the industry in Southern California, market trends and threats to the businesses, site requirements for Aerospace and Defense companies, attraction strategies, and overall impact of the Aerospace and Defense businesses on a city. Finally, the city was analyzed for this industry using SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. Current trends in the Southern California cluster of the industry show a decrease in workforce and establishments over the last decade, with employment dropping to about a third of its size in 1990. With extensive incentives in taxes, training, infrastructure, and a lower cost of living, many companies are expanding or relocating out of Los Angeles and San Diego into the Southeast. In addition to attractive training, tax, and infrastructure incentives, Aerospace and Defense companies look for business sites with access to multiple forms of transportation and a robust and educated workforce. Based on the research, the City of Menifee has many factors to favor Aerospace and Defense companies. However, there are some areas of focus for the city to address to ensure favorable results. Some recommendations include expanding the current workforce, establishing that available land meets the needs of these manufacturers, and partnering with a regional organization to keep current with trends and opportunities in the industry. Menifee should also target attracting new technology companies to ensure a continued future, like 3D printing.

A New Direction for China's Defense Industry PDF Author: Evan S. Medeiros
Publisher: Rand Corporation
ISBN: 0833040790

Pages : 331

Book Description
Since the early 1980s, a prominent and consistent conclusion drawn from research on China's defense-industrial complex has been that China's defense-production capabilities are rife with weaknesses and limitations. This study argues for an alternative approach: From the vantage point of 2005, it is time to shift the focus of current research to the gradual improvements in and the future potential of China's defense-industrial complex. The study found that China's defense sectors are designing and producing a wide range of increasingly advanced weapons that, in the short term, are relevant to a possible conflict over Taiwan but also to China's long-term military presence in Asia. Part of a larger RAND Project AIR FORCE study on Chinese military modernization, this study examines the current and future capabilities of China's defense industry. The goals of this study are to 1.
