The development of an effective method of drilling oil and gas wells to depths of 3-5 km and more is a complex problem of great practical interest. "Deep Hole Drilling With Explosives" is a distinctive and very interesting work of the engineer A. P. Excerpt from Deep Hole Drilling It is well known that a long, or deep, hole - that is, one long in proportion to its diameter - is best roughed out and finished by using a tool on the end of a long bar which enters the work from one end. This is true, whether drilling into solid metal, or boring and reaming a hole that has already been drilled or bored out. A boring bar which extends through the piece, and on which is either a stationary or a traveling head, is not satisfactory for very long work, owing to the spring and deflection of the bar, which is made worse by the fact that the bar must be enough smaller than the bore to allow room for the cutter head. While a long hole may sometimes be finished satisfac torily by means of such a boring bar, by packing the cutter head with wooden blocks which just fill the part of the bog that has been ma chined, and so support the bar, the method is fundamentally incor rect for long work. It is feasible to drill a hole to a depth of 50,000 feet by utilizing conventional rotary drilling equipment and techniques. Existing equipment is capable of drilling the hole but modifications of some equipment items are warranted for completion of the lower portion of the hole. The whole could be started with presently available equipment as soon as funds are available, a location established, and a contractor selected. While the upper portion of the hole (20,000 - 30,000 ft.) is being drilled, equipment modifications could be made and supplemental equipment developed. This would allow time to make the equipment available when needed for the lower portion of the hole. Two locations are considered as established by the criteria, both in the Coast Ranges Province of California in the vicinity of the San Andreas Fault. One location would be in an area where granitic rock outcrops at the surface while the other would be in an area where the granitic is overlain by 10,000 feet of sediments. The estimated time to drill the hole under ideal conditions at either location is 4-3/4 years at an estimated cost of $20,000,000. [$400/ft].
