This volume explores illusionism as a much larger phenomenon than optical illusion, magic shows, or special effects, as a vital part of how we perceive, process, and shape the world in which we live. Considering different cultural practices characterized by illusionism, this book suggests a new approach to illusion via media theory. Each of the chapters analyses a specific kind of illusionistic practice and the concept of illusionism it entails in a given context, including philosophy, perception and cognitive theory, performance magic, occultism, optics, physiology, early cinema, cartomancy, spiritualism, architecture, shamanic rituals, and theoretical physics, to show the diversity of shapes that illusionism and illusions can take. The book provides detailed analyses of illusions within performance and ritual magic, philosophy, art history and psychology as well as a first approach to the study of illusions outside of these established fields. It aims to find ways of identifying and analysing a wider range of illusions in the humanities. This multidisciplinary and comprehensive volume will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in media and culture, theatre and performance, philosophy, sociology, politics and religion. Real Deceptions develops a new theory of realism through close consideration of myriad contemporary art, media, and cultural practices. Rather than focusing on transgressing deceptions which distort reality, the book argues that reality lies within the deceptions themselves. That is to say, realism's political potential emerges not by revealing deception but precisely by staging deceptions--particularly deceptions that imperil the very categories of true and false. In lieu of perceiving deception as an obstacle to truth, it shows how deception functions as the truth's necessary conduit. Categories invoked in realist works, such as trompe l'oeil, illusion, hypervirtuality, and simulation help to establish how realism can be seen as moving from the creation of mere epistemological uncertainty to radical ontologically-based indeterminacy. The book cultivates this schema by considering productive connections between insights from Jacques Lacan and Jacques Rancière. Real Deceptions not only applies these theoretical frameworks to art and media examples, but also engages in the reverse move of using the "cases" to further the theories. Exchange is a pervasive concept in everyday life, affecting phenomena as diverse as interpersonal relationships and market transactions. In addition, economists have used the concept in a highly specific and clearly delineated way. Against this background, Expanding the Economic Concept of Exchange sets out to expand the concept of exchange by crossing the boundaries laid down by economists and by examining the function played by deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions. The main motivation for expanding the concept of exchange was the realization that in the prototypical economic model deception is not taken into account. Hence, economists traditionally regard deception as some sort of irrationality, as a flaw in an otherwise perfectly rational process. Authors represented in this volume take a different approach examining deception as a constituent quality of exchange. This is shown by the contributions drawing on recent developments in economic theory, by those with an anthropological orientation, as well as by a contribution referring specifically to Adam Smith. An interrogation into deception is long overdue in economics. This volume prepares the ground for and makes the first contributions to explicitly acknowledging deceptions, self-deceptions and illusions as fundamental dimensions allowing us as economists to further research and develop the concept of change. A particular and perhaps unexpected focus of this volume lies on anthropology, because economics can clearly benefit from integrating selected results on deception from outside its expanding domain.
