Wicked Bugs
Author: Amy Stewart
Publisher: Algonquin Books
ISBN: 1616200634
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
In this darkly comical look at the sinister side of our relationship with the natural world, Stewart has tracked down over one hundred of our worst entomological foes—creatures that infest, infect, and generally wreak havoc on human affairs. From the world’s most painful hornet, to the flies that transmit deadly diseases, to millipedes that stop traffic, to the “bookworms” that devour libraries, to the Japanese beetles munching on your roses, Wicked Bugs delves into the extraordinary powers of six- and eight-legged creatures. With wit, style, and exacting research, Stewart has uncovered the most terrifying and titillating stories of bugs gone wild. It’s an A to Z of insect enemies, interspersed with sections that explore bugs with kinky sex lives (“She’s Just Not That Into You”), creatures lurking in the cupboard (“Fear No Weevil”), insects eating your tomatoes (“Gardener’s Dirty Dozen”), and phobias that feed our (sometimes) irrational responses to bugs (“Have No Fear”). Intricate and strangely beautiful etchings and drawings by Briony Morrow-Cribbs capture diabolical bugs of all shapes and sizes in this mixture of history, science, murder, and intrigue that begins—but doesn’t end—in your own backyard.

Wicked Bugs (Young Readers Edition)
Author: Amy Stewart
Publisher: Algonquin Books
ISBN: 1616206993
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 193
Book Description
Did you know there are zombie bugs that not only eat other bugs but also inhabit and control their bodies? There’s even a wasp that delivers a perfectly-placed sting in a cockroach’s brain and then leads the roach around by its antennae — like a dog on a leash. Scorpions glow in ultraviolet light. Lots of bugs dine on corpses. And if you want to know how much it hurts to get stung by a bullet ant (hint: it really, really hurts), you can consult the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. It ranks the pain produced by ants and other stinging creatures. How does it work? Dr. Schmidt, the scientist who created it, voluntarily subjected himself to the stings of 150 species. Organized into thematic categories (Everyday Dangers, Unwelcome Invaders, Destructive Pests, and Terrible Threats) and featuring full-color illustrations by Briony Morrow-Cribbs, Wicked Bugs is an educational and creepy-cool guide to the worst of the worst of insects, arachnids, and other arthropods. This is the young readers adaptation of Amy Stewart’s bestselling book for adult readers.

The Everlasting Story of Nory
Author: Nicholson Baker
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0679763759
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
Our supreme fabulist of the ordinary now turns his attention on a 9-year-old American girl and produces a novel as enchantingly idiosyncratic as any he has written. Nory Winslow wants to be a dentist or a designer of pop-up books. She likes telling stories and inventing dolls. She has nightmares about teeth, which may explain her career choice. She is going to school in England, where she is mocked for her accent and her friendship with an unpopular girl, and she has made it through the year without crying. Nicholson Baker follows Nory as she interacts with her parents and peers, thinks about God and death-watch beetles, and dreams of cows with pointed teeth. In this precocious child he gives us a heroine as canny and as whimsical as Lewis Carroll's Alice and evokes childhood in all its luminous weirdness.

Book Description
An urgent account of the revolution that has upended the news business, written by one of the most accomplished journalists of our time Technology has radically altered the news landscape. Once-powerful newspapers have lost their clout or been purchased by owners with particular agendas. Algorithms select which stories we see. The Internet allows consequential revelations, closely guarded secrets, and dangerous misinformation to spread at the speed of a click. In Breaking News, Alan Rusbridger demonstrates how these decisive shifts have occurred, and what they mean for the future of democracy. In the twenty years he spent editing The Guardian, Rusbridger managed the transformation of the progressive British daily into the most visited serious English-language newspaper site in the world. At the same time, Rusbridger helped The Guardian become a pioneer in Internet journalism, stressing free access and robust interactions with readers. Book Description
A serious problem facing museum professionals is the protection of collections from damage due to insects. The book also discusses adoption of this preservation technology, presenting the development of these methods and instructions for building and upgrading treatment systems, as well as recent case histories. Death-watch and Spider Beetles of Wisconsin, Coleoptera: Ptinidae
Author: Rachel A. Arango
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Spider beetles
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
Critical insights relating to the distribution, natural history, and abundance of Ptinidae sensu lato, in Wisconsin and North America have been overlooked in many faunistic surveys and taxonomic studies, in part due to the relative difficulty in working with the contractile nature of many species and complexity of certain taxonomic characters. Work by H.C. Fall, R.E. White, and T.K. Philips significantly aided in the understanding of this family, although numerous genera are still in need of major revision. This study is the first state-wide survey of Wisconsin Ptinidae. It provides a comprehensive list of all ptinid species documented from Wisconsin, with taxonomic keys for their identification. Profiles for each species were compiled, including a taxonomic overview, capsule description, species diagnosis, and overview of their natural history. Specimens were collected using a variety of methods during two field seasons; Lindgren funnel traps and flight intercept traps were particularly significant. Trap samples from previous faunistic surveys of other taxa and mounted specimens from private and public research collections were also examined. Seventy-eight Wisconsin pest control companies and the University of Wisconsin insect diagnostic laboratory were consulted for information regarding indoor pest species of Ptinidae. During this survey, 28 genera and 64 species of Ptinidae were documented from the state from 2,063 specimens. Of these, 14 genera and 46 species are considered new state records, a 72% increase from the number of species known previously.
