Excerpt from Death-Bed Scenes, and Pastoral Conversations, Vol. 1 of 3 ON a former occasion we have said, how much We were gratified by the testimonies of approbation, which our Book had received from various quarters; but, the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge having recently placed it upon their catalogue, after so decisive a proof of the good Opinion of that vene rable body, we can have nothing further in point of credit to expect, or even to wish. It is well known, that such a distinction is not to be obtained by parti ality, or purchased by bribes; or ever granted without the most deliberate and scrupulous caution. But the views of the Society might in a great degree be frustrated, if a Book, which appears to them to be well calculated to advance the religion and morals of the community, were not published in a form as much compressed and as little expensive as possible. This then is the object of the present edition, which, being similar in type and size to that popular work The Family Library, will at the same time not be defi cient in neatness and elegance. Excerpt from Death-Bed Scenes, and Pastoral Conversations, Vol. 3 of 3 Of the three stories, which this third volume con tains, the second was written concurrently with the action of the piece. We know the fact by the per sonal concern which we ourselves had in the events that are recorded; but in all the cases in which it happened, we know it by the internal evidence of the manuscripts. When a piece was composed after the whole action was terminated, the Author de scribed his characters, in each particular passage, as they appeared to him upon the general view, without any sub sequent alteration; but when he wrote con currently, he described them as they appeared to him at the moment, in different lights on different occa sions; and he was compelled, in consequence, in order to avoid seeming contradictions and incon sistencies, when his opinions of the several characters had undergone a change, to insert numerous cor rections and qualifications of the previous history. All such alterations in the original manuscripts (no copy having ever been taken) attest the fact of the concurrent writing.
