Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos

Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos PDF Author: Carlos Montemayor
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292744765
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume Three contains plays by six Mexican indigenous writers. Their plays appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Montemayor and Frischmann have abundantly annotated the Spanish, English, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that introduce the work of each playwright and discuss the role of theater within indigenous communities. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples.

Mist

Mist PDF Author: Miguel de Unamuno
Publisher: Aris and Phillips Hispanic Cla
ISBN: 1908343214
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 409

Book Description
Mist (Niebla), published in 1914, is one of Miguel de Unamuno's key works; a truly Modernist work of Europe-wide significance which aims to shatter the conventions of fiction, using the novel as a vehicle for exploration of philosophical themes. The plot revolves around the character of Augusto, a wealthy, intellectual and introverted young man and his love affair with Eugenia, which eventually ends in heartbreak. Augusto decides to kill himself, but decides that he needs to consult Unamuno himself, who had written an article on suicide which Augusto had read. When Augusto speaks with Unamuno, the truth is revealed that Augusto is actually a fictional character whom Unamuno has created. Augusto is not real, Unamuno explains, and for that reason cannot kill himself. Augusto asserts that he exists, even though he acknowledges internally that he doesn't, and threatens Unamuno by telling him that he is not the ultimate author. Augusto reminds Unamuno that he might be just one of God's dreams. Augusto dies and the book ends with the author himself debating to himself about bringing back the character of Augusto. He establishes, however, that this would not be feasible. Following on from his translation of Abel Sanchez , John Macklin's edition provides a much needed new English translation, alongside the Spanish text, together with a substantial introduction.

Maldonado Journey to the Kingdom of New Mexico

Maldonado Journey to the Kingdom of New Mexico PDF Author: Gilbert Maldonado
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1490739556
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 687

Book Description
Volume IX is a continuation of the journey of the Maldonado family to the Kingdom of New Mexico. It documents the Maldonado descendants of Hernn Martn Baena and his wife Catalina Garca. This couple is connected to New Mexico through the marriage of their grandson Diego de Vera to Mara de Abendao, granddaughter of Juan Lpez Holgun and Catalina de Villanueva, founders of the Kingdom of New Mexico. From this marriage and the marriages of their great-granddaughters Mara Ortiz de Vera and Petronila de Vera (Salas), Don Hernn and Doa Catalina became the ancestors of leading New Mexicans in later generations. This volume contains not only their direct line of descent but also cousins, uncles, aunts, and in-laws. The Maldonado database has more than 5,800 names, with many of them represented here. The time period is generally from 1598 through the nineteenth century for most names, though the direct line continues to the present. Hernn Martn Baena is the ancestor of many people living in New Mexico today. In this volume his other descendants can trace their connections to cousins from this extended Maldonado family. Hernn Martn Baena and Catalina Garca are my twelfth great-grandparents.
