In this work I propose a new approach to the word/image problematic based on the recognition that verbal and visual images present ontologically different epistemologies. Grounded in the philosophical critique of representation I understand the relationship between the verbal and the visual as the tension created by the two epistemological fields in their different modes of contact. Situated in the emerging field of Visual Culture this investigation is fundamentally interdisciplinary. In addition to literary studies and art history, I productively deploy philosophical, anthropological, sociological, historical and even scientific concepts in a hybrid discourse to critically refer and analyze the many-fold complexities presented by the word/image dynamic.Within the main theoretical framework provided by Nelson Goodman's and Jean-Luc Nancy'a aesthetics, Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics, and Martin Heidegger's phenomenology of time, each of the study's first three parts analyzes a different mode of the word/image relationship. My analysis of the paintings by argentine artist Xul Solar (1887--1963) examines the interaction of verbal and visual elements in the same field of reference tracing the refinement of the relationship and placing it at the centre of his artistic project. I develop the concept of interartistic transposition to investigate how Cervantes' Don Quixote (1605--1615) is appropriated in Mexico to organize the visual space of Jose Guadalupe Posada's (1852--1913) Calavera de don Quijote (c. 1905) and Alfredo Zalce's (1908--2003) Evocacion quijotesca (1985). And in Mario Vargas Llosa's (1936--) Los cuadernos de don Rigoberto (1997) I examine how by absenting its sense from the text art opens a new horizon in the novel where the character find their complement.Lastly, the final chapter is a study of short stories by argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899--1986), and prints by Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898--1972) that provides what can be understood as an ontology of the word/image relationship. Kurt Godel's theorem of incompleteness provides a critical model to analyze the very limits of verbal and visual representation, the limits beyond which words cannot speak and images cannot see.

Tradicionalmente, los estudios sobre la imagen han estado dominados por temas como la copia, el parecido, la semejanza, el realismo, pero la reflexión en los últimos tiempos ha tomado otros caminos que cuestionan incluso la noción misma de imagen, nombre que abarca una amplia variedad de cosas, incluso ideas. Pero esa diversidad hace imposible su comprensión, al grado que no sabemos todavía cómo definirla, cuál es su relación con lo verbal, cómo opera sobre el observador y sobre el mundo. La conciencia de que no vemos con los ojos, sino con nuestra cultura e historia nos hace dudar si, más allá de lo fisiológico, se pueda seguir hablando de imágenes puras, no relacionadas con la información de los otros sentidos, los conocimientos y datos de la memoria. Los medios digitales hacen pensar que los otros sentidos son parte de una experiencia no sólo visual, sino multisensorial.
