A History of Popular Education

A History of Popular Education PDF Author: Sjaak Braster
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317849949
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Popular Education is a concept with many meanings. With the rise of national systems of education at the beginning of the nineteenth-century, it was related to the socially inclusive concept of citizenship coined by privileged members with vested interests in the urban society that could only be achieved by educating the common people, or in other words, the uncontrollable masses that had nothing to lose. In the twentieth-century, Popular Education became another word for initiatives taken by religious and socialist groups for educating working-class adults, and women. However, in the course of the twentieth-century, the meaning of the term shifted towards empowerment and the education of the oppressed. This book explores the several ways in which Popular Education has been theoretically and empirically defined, in several regions of the world, over the last three centuries. It is the result of work by scholars from Europe and the Americas during the 31st session of the International Standing Conference on the History of Education (ISCHE) that was organised at Utrecht University, the Netherlands in August 2009. This book was originally published as a special issue of Paedagogica Historica.

Book Description
This international text with contributions from Europe, the United States, South America, Africa and Australia brings together a unique collection of both experienced and new writers examining the relationship between popular and higher education. It shows how university-based teachers and researchers can use their work to support and resource popular struggles for democracy, equality and social justice - at a time when all the demands being made upon them are towards institutional disengagement from social and political action. Exploring how many of the current trends in intellectual and institutional life can be challenged and changed, the book considers amongst other themes, the hegemony of technical rationality and the new managerialism, the construction of higher education as a competitive market place and the dominance of individualised models and modes of learning and achievement.

The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990

The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 PDF Author: Robert Austin
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 9780739102886
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
The popular education and adult literacy movements in Chile have historically represented competing paths toward a literate society: one born and nurtured through bitter nineteenth-century labor struggles, the other a compensatory effort by the modern state to limit the political potential of literacy. Robert Austin's book explores the contest between the state and popular education in three paradigmatic Latin American regimes: that of Eduardo Frei Montalva (Christian Democrat, 1964-70), Salvador Allende (Socialist, 1970-73) and Augusto Pinochet (Dictator, 1973-90). Robert Austin's engaging narrative captures the relationship between the Chilean state, formal and non-formal literacy, and popular education, from the demise of liberal capitalism to the consolidation of neoliberalism. This remarkable investigation of the dynamic link between the historical process, literacy, and pedagogy celebrates popular education's victory in securing the inclusion, and subsequent empowerment, of women and ethnic minorities. The State, Literacy, and Popular Education in Chile, 1964-1990 will be of great interest to political scientists, cultural historians, and scholars of education.
