Cripple Joe

Cripple Joe PDF Author: Donald Davis
Publisher: Blair
ISBN: 9780895876676
Category : Authors, American
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Donald Davis has remarked that he "didn't learn stories, I just absorbed them" from a family of traditional storytellers that has lived on the same western North Carolina land since 1781. Considered by many to be the father of family tales, Donald turns the focus of his newest collection on his own father, Joe.As Donald reveals in the opening story, when he was 28, he mistakenly thought his father had died. Until learning of the mistake, he lamented that he'd been "too young and immature to know to ask for the stories that would have filled out his life." Given a "second chance," Donald asked those questions for the next 22 years. In this collection of 20 tender and often humorous stories--including one that tells how the elder Davis came to be called "Cripple Joe"--he shares the lessons he learned from his father. The late Wilma Dykeman wrote in an article for the New York Times, "I could have listened all morning to Donald Davis. . . . His stories often left listeners limp with laughter at the same time they struggled with a lump in the throat." If you are already a Donald Davis fan, here's his latest offering. If you have yet to discover him, here's your chance to see what all the excitement is about.

Travellers through Empire

Travellers through Empire PDF Author: Cecilia Morgan
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773552103
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
In the late eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century, an unprecedented number of Indigenous people – especially Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabeg, and Cree – travelled to Britain and other parts of the world. Who were these transatlantic travellers, where were they going, and what were they hoping to find? Travellers through Empire unearths the stories of Indigenous peoples including Mississauga Methodist missionary and Ojibwa chief Reverend Peter Jones, the Scots-Cherokee officer and interpreter John Norton, Catherine Sutton, a Mississauga woman who advocated for her people with Queen Victoria, E. Pauline Johnson, the Mohawk poet and performer, and many others. Cecilia Morgan retraces their voyages from Ontario and the northwest fur trade and details their efforts overseas, which included political negotiations with the Crown, raising funds for missionary work, receiving an education, giving readings and performances, and teaching international audiences about Indigenous cultures. As they travelled, these remarkable individuals forged new families and friendships and left behind newspaper interviews, travelogues, letters, and diaries that provide insights into their cross-cultural encounters. Chronicling the emotional ties, contexts, and desires for agency, resistance, and negotiation that determined their diverse experiences, Travellers through Empire provides surprising vantage points on First Nations travels and representations in the heart of the British Empire.

History of Davis Islands

History of Davis Islands PDF Author: Rodney Kite-Powell
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1625840004
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
Tampa's Davis Islands has long been among the most desirable places to live on Florida's west coast. Built from mud dredged from the bottom of the Tampa Bay, it's possible few thought the project would amount to very much, with the exception of its creator, David P. Davis. The developer and Tampa native Davis purchased the dredged land in the 1920s during the Florida land boom; the gamble paid off in dividends, as the Davis Islands made him wildly rich and nationally famous. He followed the Islands up with a subdivision twice its size in St. Augustine, which he named Davis Shores. Davis sold his Tampa development in August 1926, but he slipped into debt and died under mysterious circumstances while en route to Europe aboard a luxury liner only months later. Though their creator did not live to see it, work on Davis Islands continued, and the development ultimately became an unmitigated success. Join author Rodney Kite-Powell as he examines the history of one of Florida's most famous neighborhoods.
