This is a biography of my great, great uncle, Capt. David Valentine Auxier, USA, who was killed in the Civil War, and for whom I was named. Capt. Auxier spent six months in a Confederate prison after being captured shortly after enlisting in a unit of the Union Army in 1862. David Valentine was killed two months after marrying a 17 year old young woman he met while on assignment in Northern Kentucky. He was buried in a family cemetery on the battlefield at Saltville, Virginia, where he remained in almost total obscurity for 126 years until the I, the author of this book, relocated his remains to his family cemetery in Kentucky. A memorial service with military honor guard was organized at the time of his reinterment in Kentucky. In writing this book, the author has unburdened himself of the nagging feeling that there was some ethereal debt to his namesake ancestor that could only be repaid by relocating the soldiers remains to his home ground and by reporting the story in written form.
