Book Description
But David tarried behind. The scribe has chosen a subordinating conjunction (but) to conceal a negative abstraction worthy of investigation. The verb tarried is passive in its expression, and it too is hiding a secret. The scribe is trying to lead us to believe that David was tired and needed a rest; however, investigations persuade us to believe that something else was on his mindCould it be, a few days before, David received a text message from Bathsheba to induce his probing spirit that kept him home and awake? after all, they were neighbors and David was a cats meowCould it be that their attraction factors were aroused and one or the other made a gesture of willingness?Could it be also that she had seen him up there before and lust was conceived in her heartand she thought this a tranquil opportunity to gratify her lust?and, if it came to light, he could sweep it under his political rugDavid, turning to politics to cover his tracks was the mistake of his life, and many in religious leadership are following the same path.

David's Politics

David's Politics PDF Author: Paul R. Abramson
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1498545521
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 161

Book Description
David’s Politics evaluates what we can learn about politics by studying David’s life as presented in the Books of Samuel through the first two chapters of 1 Kings. I begin by discussing the rules for kingship set forth in Deuteronomy and carry this through to the elders’ demand that the prophet Samuel appoint a king. Despite his reluctance he appoints Saul, who has many military successes. But when he fails when he fails to annihilate the Amalekites God withdraws his grace and Saul falls into a state of depression, which grows worse as the story progresses. David is called to Saul’s court as a musician. I argue that he has three roles, first as a servant to King Saul, second as a rebel against Saul, and third as king. As a servant to Saul, David establishes his credentials as a warrior and also becomes the king’s son-in-law. As a rebel against Saul, David again takes actions that solidify his future support in Israel and Judah. David has two opportunities to kill Saul, but refuses to kill him. He also cements his political support in Judah. After becoming king, David’s military successes are the prime reason for his support. He also administered justice, which may have further bolstered his legitimacy. Indeed, David did what was right “all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite” (1 Kings 15:5). By committing adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife, and by having Uriah murdered, David brings grief upon himself and his family: the rape of his only named daughter, the murder of Amnon, his first-born son and the death in battle of Absalom, who is probably David’s oldest surviving son. Throughout most of this account David displays remarkable political sagacity, and more can be learned studying his life than that of any other king of Israel or Judah.

David and the Politicians

David and the Politicians PDF Author: Gene Williams
Publisher: Covenant Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1644684772
Category : Fiction

Pages : 95

Book Description
The author has long been fascinated by the stories of David, soldier, king; so powerful, yet so weak and vulnerable. His is the human story exemplified in the life of one man. As his story unfolds there are lessons to be found, he learns, he forgets. David's self-will runs riot followed by his deep repentance and a sense of forgiveness and relief. David becomes every man and every woman. When one looks at David's life and sees themselves, change can happen, and spiritual growth may occur. The author says, "When I read the life of David and then look in the mirror, I feel a sense of relief in knowing that there is hope for me too!"

Warrior Politics

Warrior Politics PDF Author: Robert D. Kaplan
Publisher: Vintage
ISBN: 0375726276
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
In Warrior Politics, the esteemed journalist and analyst Robert D. Kaplan explores the wisdom of the ages for answers for today’s leaders. While the modern world may seem more complex and dangerous than ever before, Kaplan writes from a deeper historical perspective to reveal how little things actually change. Indeed, as Kaplan shows us, we can look to history’s most influential thinkers, who would have understood and known how to navigate today’s dangerous political waters. Drawing on the timeless work of Sun Tzu, Thucydides, Machiavelli, Hobbes, among others, Kaplan argues that in a world of unstable states and an uncertain future, it is increasingly imperative to wrest from the past what we need to arm ourselves for the road ahead. Wide-ranging and accessible, Warrior Politics is a bracing book with an increasingly important message that challenges readers to see the world as it is, not as they would like it to be.

Book of David

Book of David PDF Author: David Steinberg
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1416545565
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
From award-winning comedian, director, writer, and producer David Steinberg comes the totally original, utterly blasphemous, and hysterically funny memoir of a young man who emerged from a traditional Jewish childhood to become an international star—all because, it seems, he kept God in stitches. David Steinberg was raised in Winnipeg, Canada, by parents who expected little from him. And no wonder. Instead of studying Talmud in order to become a rabbi, he chose to major in Martin and Lewis with a minor in basketball. As David imagines the story of his life (since his success otherwise makes no sense), God one day spotted him on the playground and decided that this young man with no ambition could go far with His help. Sure enough, God soon had David on network TV and Broadway, and selling out nightclubs across the country—as well as being pursued by hot starlets. The Book of David is David Steinberg's hilarious trip down memory lane, assuming that the lane has a biblical address. This wild riff on the Old Testament is guaranteed laughter.
