En la fase de selección se identifican y seleccionan las variables relevantes en los datos y se aplican las técnicas de muestro adecuadas. Dado que los datos provienen de diferentes fuentes, es necesaria su exploración mediante técnicas de análisis exploratorio de datos. A continuación es necesaria la limpieza de los datos, ya que pueden contener valores atípicos, valores faltantes y valores erróneos. A continuación, si es necesario, se lleva a cabo la transformación de los datos, generalmente mediante técnicas de reducción o aumento de la dimensión y escalado simple y multidimensional, entre otras. Las cuatro primeras fases se suelen englobar bajo el nombre de preparación de datos. En la fase de análisis de datos, se decide cuál es la tarea a realizar (clasificar, agrupar, etc.) y se elige la técnica descriptiva o predictiva que se va a utilizar.
