Contexte L'usage qui est fait des médicaments reflète à la fois l'état de santé d'une population et ses habitudes de consommation. C'est également un enjeu politique lié au coût généré pour les Etats en matière de remboursements. D'un pays à l'autre il existe des variabilités en terme de consommation médicamenteuse. Une manière d'améliorer l'utilisation du médicament, notamment en soins ambulatoires, est d'étudier celle-ci en France par rapport à d'autres pays. Cela nécessite l'accès à des bases de données internationales pertinentes. Méthode La recherche internet de bases de données directement accessibles en ligne et les demandes d'informations envoyées par courriels auprès des institutions nationales possiblement concernées des 31 pays membres de l'Espace Economique Européen ont permis d'établir un état des lieux de ces bases de données. Celui-ci synthétise leur accessibilité, les sources utilisées pour la récupération des données et les types de traitements concernés. De plus l'étude recherchait parmi les bases de données celles utilisant la classification et l'unité de comparaison mises en place par l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé pour une analyse objective des délivrances de médicaments. Résultats Il n'a été trouvé aucune information pour 3 pays (Malte, Grèce, Roumanie) sur les 31 étudiés. Les informations trouvées sur le Luxembourg, la Lettonie et la Bulgarie n'étaient pas assez fiables pour être retenues. Sur les 25 pays restants seuls dix diffusent publiquement leurs données de consommation, neuf autres privilégiant un accès sur requête auprès des autorités concernées. Douze bases de données européennes ne concernent que les traitements prescrits et remboursés, excluant ainsi un pan entier d'usage des médicaments (prescrits non remboursés et automédication). Enfin, si 16 bases de données nationales comparent leurs données en utilisant le système de l'OMS, ce n'est pas le cas des autres tels que la France. Celle-ci analyse la consommation de médicaments en nombre de boîtes vendues et en coûts générés, biaisant la comparabilité internationale. Conclusion A l'heure où l'ouverture des données de santé fait débat, les politiques nationales influent sur l'accessibilité des informations disponibles pour le public et les chercheurs. Pourtant, un accès facilité aux données de santé ne relevant pas d'une atteinte aux données personnelles présente un intérêt pour la conduite d'études de Santé Publique.
