Do Immigrants Work in Riskier Jobs?
Author: Pia M. Orrenius
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437924336
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
Recent reports suggest that immigrants are more likely to hold jobs with worse working conditions than U.S.-born workers, perhaps because immigrants work in jobs that â¿¿natives donâ¿¿t want.â¿¿ Despite this widespread view, earlier studies have not found immigrants to be in riskier jobs than natives. This study combines individual-level data from the 2003â¿¿2005 American Community Survey on work-related injuries and fatalities to take a fresh look at whether foreign-born workers are employed in more dangerous jobs. The results indicate that immigrants are in fact more likely to work in risky jobs than U.S.-born workers, partly due to differences in average characteristics, such as immigrantsâ¿¿ lower English language ability and educational attainment. Illus.

Foreigners, Refugees or Minorities?
Author: Didier Bigo
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317133927
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
When immigration policy and the treatment of Roma collide in international relations there are surprising consequences which are revelatory of the underlying tensions between internal and external policies in the European Union. This book examines the relationship of citizenship, ethnicity and international relations and how these three aspects of the State, its people and its neighbours relate to one another. It studies the wide issue of international relations, citizenship and minority discrimination through the lens of the case study of European Roma who seek refugee status in Canada on account of their persecution in Europe. The volume assesses the relationships among citizenship, state protection and persecution and minority status, and how they can intersect with and destabilize foreign affairs. The central background to the book is the European treatment of Roma, their linkages with visa and asylum policies and their human rights repercussions . The various contributions reveal how modern liberal democracies can find themselves in contradictory positions concerning their citizens - when these are looking for protection abroad - and foreigners - in search of international protection - as a consequence of visa and pre-border surveillance policies and practices.

Whence They Came
Author: Barbara Ann Roberts
Publisher: University of Ottawa Press
ISBN: 0776601636
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
Until recently, immigration policy was largely in the hands of a small group of bureaucrats, who strove desperately to fend off "offensive" peoples. Barbara Roberts explores these government officials, showing how they not only kept the doors closed but also managed to find a way to get rid of some of those who managed to break through their carefully guarded barriers. Robert's important book explores a dark history with an honest and objective style. Published in English.
