Book Description
Excerpt from Dancing as an Art and Pastime The purpose and plan of the present volume are set forth in the introductory chapter 5 but it seems only right that I Should express my thanks to those pupils who have been 'kind enough to aid me in illustrating the various attitudes that may or may not properly be assumed in dancing. If the positions described as good appear in some cases to fall short of the ideal of perfection, it Should be remembered by those disposed to be hypercritical, that there is a great difference between assuming a difficult attitude momentarily in dancing, and remaining in one without movement, sufficiently long _for even a rapid photograph to be taken. It was found that in this case a really instantaneous process would be impracticable, and many good negatives of groups were spoilt through a Slight movement on the part of one of the subjects. Beyond this, the work of reproduction necessarily involves a Slight loss of detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. May-Pole Possibilities

May-Pole Possibilities PDF Author: Jennette Emeline Carpenter Lincoln

Book Description
Excerpt from May-Pole Possibilities: With Dances and Drills for Modern Pastime It is the desire of most instructors in physical education for women to introduce into their work toward the close of the college year, in order to interest the majority of students, some thing oi a lighter, more artistic nature, and at the end provide a suitable entertainment which shall include not merely the young women, always too few, who are naturally strong, graceful, and attractive in features, but the entire class without selection or dis crimination. The May-pole, which we are able to trace back to old English and even Roman sources has taken on new life and possibilities. It now serves much more than a picturesque purpose. It provides for us an interesting part of the year's work, and shows in the grace, precision and harmony of movement which it evokes, the immeasurable benefits of corrective, hygienic and educative exercise. Book Description
Excerpt from Dance as an Art-Form: Its History and Development I hasten to explain that this book is not for the finished artist, nor for the philosophic aesthete. It is expressly written to help, in quite another way, the experienced professionals of the intellectual dance: by teaching those who watch them, who study with them, and who write about them to appreciate more fully their art. A History of Dancing (Classic Reprint)

A History of Dancing (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Reginald St Johnston

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Dancing Of late years there has been a tendency, not only on the stage, but also in the ball-rooms, to wander from the polished graces of our ancestors, and to introduce, in the former, certain styles of dancing that are far from graceful, such as cake-walks, high-kicking, and other extravagant forms which can only debase the art; and in the latter, a wild and irresponsible romping, which has made such expres sions as Kitchen Lancers a bye-word. In this book I have endeavoured to show from what beautiful origins many of our dances have sprung, and how the great dancers of the past were wont to associate with their dances the poetry and noble thoughts that were the theme round which their skill revolved. In tracing the history of the subject I have found an almost entirely new field to work upon, for with the exception of two books, one by a Frenchman.
