Book Description
Excerpt from Dairying in War and Peace Production increases to supply an expanding market for milk may be expected as the result of several factors. (1) Feed supplies for dairying may be increased as a consequence of further declines in the number of work animals, by improvement in the varieties of feed crops produced, and by an increased use of lime and fertilizers on crop and pasture land. (2) Ah improvement in the efficiency of the average dairy cow appears likely, not only because of continued culling of inferior animals and more effective disease control, but also because of a rapidly expanding artificial-breeding program. Most of the improve 'ments from.the widespread use of improved sires, made possible by arti ficial breeding, are still to be achieved, and over a longer period it is possible that productive capacity will be increased by cross breeding. (3) Further mechanization provides a basis for increased operating effi cisney of the dairy enterprise. Shifts in the urban population, accompanying the probable future growth of industry in the South and West, may bring about changes in the regional pattern of milk production for fluid use. 'with relatively few alternative livestock enterprises that compete effectively with dairying, an expansion of milk production in the major manufactured dairy-product areas appears probable as methods of dairy processing and transportation are further improved. Dairy Fortunes (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Landy Larkin

Book Description
Excerpt from Dairy Fortunes Within 25 years cows that will make over 500 pounds of butter each, can be produced in the United States. Why keep cows when will produce more milk, more cream and more butter? Most dairymen are easily satisfied and do not expect much. Keep no cow that, will not produce $100 a year. A few years ago I wrote and published a book, and when I talked about selling copies of it, my friends said I was a candidate for a lunatic asylum, but the publishers sold over copies, and they expect to exceed the mark. I expect to live to the time when cows that will make 600 pounds of butter will be numbered by hundreds of thousands. Every dairyman must read and study what he reads, and must learn that successful dairying depends principally upon his tact and earnest effort. Book learning does not make the successful man. The greatest book ever written about how to get along in the world, was written by a man who always ate the crust of poverty - he could tell other people how to suc ceed, but was a helpless failure himself. Book Description
Excerpt from Dairying for Profit: Or the Poor Man's Cow In the winter of 1891-1892, I was requested by Mr. Hugh Graham, of Montreal, Publisher of the Family Herald and Weekly Star, to write some articles on Dairy Matters, for his paper. To fully appreciate the compliment paid me, one would need to know the enormous and rapidly increasing circulation of this great paper. As a result, I received so many kindly letters about my Dairy Articles and so many requests for further information, that it led to my collecting the letters with some others I had written, and adding to them all I thought necessary to cover the ground. British Colonial Dairying

British Colonial Dairying PDF Author: G. Sutherland Thomson

Book Description
Excerpt from British Colonial Dairying: For School, Farm, and Factory The author of British and Colonial Dairying set himself a somewhat difficult task when he planned to write a book on the subject of dairying that would be equally acceptable and useful in different parts of the Empire. It is true that the principles which apply in the production of milk and in the manufacture of dairy products are the same everywhere, but there are important differences in the methods which are followed in Australasia as compared with the mother country, and it is often difficult to persuade the average dairyman to distinguish between the underlying principles and those things which relate merely to the practice of his art. Having had some personal experience in dairy ing operations in the different countries included in the term British and Colonial, I am ready to say that the author has succeeded admirably in the object which he had in View. The science of dairying is of very recent origin compared with the antiquity of the art, and it is the business of the dairy teacher or writer to apply the lessons of science to everyday practical work. Book Description
Excerpt from Dairy Farming It is fitting that the first book of the series Should deal with what' is probably, the most important source of income of American farmers, dairy farming. As population increases we must of necessity depend more on dairy products and less on beef cattle. The best methods of producing beef are very different from the best methods of producing milk. Many farmers who once kept beef cattle are changing to dairying. For such farmers a study of dairying is of particular importance because it will bring to them in formation that has been worked Out by long experience in dairy regions. Even in the old established dairy regions the changes in prices of land, feed, labor, and dairy products and the increasing importance of manure for growing cash crops, make a study of the principles of dairy farming of prime importance.
