There were more herds and more cow-years summarized in 1981 than in 1980, with an average milk yield of pounds in 1981 compared with an average of pounds in 1980. The number of cow-years per herd averaged 83. California had the highest average milk yield with herds averaging pounds Arizona was second with 114 herds averaging pounds; Washington, third with 618 he'rds averaging pounds; and New Mexico, fourth with 54 herds averaging pounds. Thirty-five States had average milk yields above pounds. Average fat yield for herds with records passing edits for fat yield or percentage (records from 18 herds were eliminated) was 558 pounds, 5 pounds more than in 1980, and average fat percentage was percent, percent less than in. 1980. Herds with protein data included cow-years and averaged pounds of milk, 588 pounds of fat, 507 pounds of protein, and percent protein.
