The credit of having first seen bacteria and of thus discovering a new world belongs to Leuwenfioek, a private individual who lived some 300 years ago at Delft (holland), and by means of a simple microscope which had been constructed for his use examined all sorts of substances. To the astonishment of the scientific world of his time he demonstrated by means of this instrument that living organisms, of a kind up to that time quite unknown, were to be found in putrefying fluids, saliva, &c.
