El uso del concepto de 'reflexión' marca una frontera entre dos maneras fundamentalmente distintas de comprender la fenomenología; por una parte, una vertiente reflexiva, fundada y ejemplificada por Husserl, y por otra, una vertiente hermenéutica, puesta en marcha por el joven Heidegger. La idea de que ambas vertientes de la investigación fenomenológica son incompatibles ha gozado de amplia aceptación entre la crítica. Se trata de una idea sugerida por Heidegger en varios lugares de su obra temprana y nítidamente desarrollada, entre otros, por Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann en su libro Hermeneutik und Reflexión, Der Begriff der Phänomenologie bei Heidegger und Husserl. En contraste con esta visión recibida, y discutiendo algunas de las más recientes propuestas sobre el tema, Felipe León desarrolla en el presente libro la idea de que no hay una disyuntiva, establecida con base en el uso de la reflexión, entre estas dos maneras de entender la investigación fenomenológica.
