The top quark pair production cross-section[sigma][sub t[bar t]] has been measured in p[bar p] collisions at center of mass energies of 1.96 TeV using Tevatron Run 2 data. In the beginning of Run 2 both CDF and D0[sigma][sub t[bar t]] measurements in the dilepton channel t[bar t][yields] WbW[bar b][yields][bar[ell]][nu][sub[ell]]b[ell][prime][bar[nu]][sub[ell][prime]][bar b] and in the lepton plus jets channel t[bar t][yields] WbW[bar b][yields] q[bar q][prime] b[ell][bar[nu]][sub[ell]][bar b]+[bar[ell]][nu][sub[ell]]bq[bar q][prime][bar b] agree with the NLO (Next-to-Leading-Order) theoretical predictions. The presence of a top signal in Tevatron data has been reestablished.

We present a measurement of the t{anti t} production cross section in p{anti p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV and a measurement of top quark mass m{sub t} by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. The measurements are based on the data from the 1992- 1996 run during which the D0 detector was exposed to the integrated luminosity of approximately 125 pb−1. We observe 39 t{anti t} candidate events in the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels with an expected background of 13.7 ± 2.2 events. We measure the top quark mass m{sub t} using a two constraint fit to m{sub t} in t{anti t} → bW {anti b}W− final states with one W decaying to q{anti q} and the other to e? or??. Events are binned in the fit mass versus a measure of probability for events to be the signal rather than a background. Likelihood fits to the data yield m{sub t} = 173.3 ± 5.6 (stat) ± 6.2 (syst) GeV/c2. For this mass we measure the t{anti t} production cross section to be 5.5 ± 1.8 pb.

Measurements of the top quark mass and the t[bar t] production cross section, obtained by CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Tevatron, are presented. The methodology of analyses and their underlying assumptions are summarized. The CDF and D0 top mass averages, based on [approx]100 pb[sup -1] of data collected by each experiment in Run-I, and obtained from a set of selected measurements in several channels are M[sub t] = 176:0 [plus-minus] 4:0(stat) [plus-minus] 5:1(syst) GeV/c[sup 2] and M[sub t] = 172:1 [plus-minus] 5:2(stat) [plus-minus] 4:9(syst) GeV/c[sup 2], respectively. The combined Tevatron top quark mass is M[sub t] = 174:3 [plus-minus]3:2(stat) [plus-minus]4:0(syst) GeV/c]sup 2], where the correlations between CDF and D0 averages were taken into account. The CDF measurement of the t[bar t] cross section (assuming M[sub t] = 175 GeV/c[sup 2]) is [sigma][sub tt] = 7.6[sup 1.8][sub 1.5] pb, and the D0 value (assuming M[sub t] = 172.1 GeV/c[sup 2]) is [sigma][sub tt] = 5:9 [plus-minus] 1:7 pb. In anticipation of the much increased statistics in Run-II, the fact that top quark physics is one of the best windows to new physics beyond the Standard Model is emphasized.

Discovery of the top quark in 1995 at the Fermilab Tevatron collider concluded a long search following the 1977 discovery of bottom (b) quark [1] and represents another triumph of the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles. Top quark is one of the fundamental fermions in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions and is the weak-isospin partner of the bottom quark. A precise measurement of top pair production cross-section would be a test of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) prediction. Presently, Tevatron is the world's highest energy collider where protons (p) and anti-protons ({anti p}) collide at a centre of mass energy (ps) of 1.96 TeV. At Tevatron top (t) and anti-top ({anti t}) quarks are predominantly pair produced through strong interactions--quark annihilation ({approx_equal} 85%) and gluon fusion ({approx_equal} 15%). Due to the large mass of top quark, t or {anti t} decays ({approx} 10{sup -25} sec) before hadronization and in SM framework, it decays to a W boson and a b quark with {approx} 100% branching ratio (BR). The subsequent decay of W boson determines the major signatures of t{anti t} decay. If both W bosons (coming from t and {anti t} decays) decay into leptons (viz., ev{sub e}, {mu}{nu}{sub {mu}} or {tau}{nu}{sub {tau}}) the corresponding t{bar t} decay is called dileptonic decay. Of all dileptonic decay modes of t{bar t}, the t{bar t} {yields} WWb{anti b} {yields} ev{sub e}{mu}{nu}{sub {mu}}b{anti b} (e{mu} channel) decay mode has the smallest background contamination from Z{sup 0} production or Drell-Yan process; simultaneously, it has the highest BR ({approx} 3.16%) [2] amongst all dileptonic decay modes of t{bar t}. During Run I (1992-1996) of Tevatron, three e{mu} candidate events were detected by D0 experiment, out of 80 candidate events (inclusive of all decay modes of t{bar t}). Due to the rarity of the t{bar t} events, the measured cross-section has large uncertainty in its value (viz., 5.69 {+-} 1.21(stat) {+-} 1.04(sys) pb {at} {radical}s = 1.8 TeV measured by D0 [3]). This analysis presents a cross section measurement in e{mu} channel utilizing {approx} 228 pb{sup -1} of data collected by D0 experiment during Tevatron Run II (between June 2002 and April 2004).
