Lateral Load Tests on Full-scale Pile Groups in Cohesive Soils
A Lateral-Load Test of a Full-Scale Pile Group in Sand
Author: Clark Stephen Morrison
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Materials
Languages : en
Pages : 306
Book Description
Lateral-load tests were performed on a large-scale, well-instrumented group of piles in sand. A similar single pile, also well-instrumented, was tested in the same soil. The group of piles and the single pile were installed in Houston for previous research projects. The native clay soil was removed from the upper portion of the piles and replaced with clean sand. Cyclic lateral loads were applied to the piles, and the response of the instrumentation was recorded. The results of the loads test of the group are compared with the results of current design methods. The methods include DEFPIG, the Focht-Koch method, the single-pile method, and the Bogard-Matlock method. Because none of the methods provided entirely satisfactory results, an analytical procedure is provided which yields good agreement with the results of the load-test.

The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common t

Pile groups under cyclic lateral loading

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
It is the aim of this research work is to investigate and to assess quatitatively as well as quantitatively the bearing behaviour of pile groups subjected to cyclic lateral loading. In this context, the influences of different boundary conditions, in particular the soil properties and the pile group geometry are to be analysed experimentally and numerically. Based on a brief literature review in chapter 2, model tests (centrifuge and small-scale at 1g) and numerical investigations have been carried out to contribute to a better understanding of the cyclic behaviour of pile groups. Chapter 3 describes the test procedure and summarises the results of centrifuge tests, which have been carried out at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) in Perth, Australia. Further investigations have been carried out by means of smallscale model tests at 1g in the testing facilities at the University of Kassel, Germany, with the results as summarised in chapter 4. A comparison of individual results of both test series is provided in chapter 5. The numerical studies in chapter 6 have been carried out in order to analyse the general ability of numerical simulations to calculate the response of pile groups to cyclic lateral loading. Based on the previously derived results, chapter 7 provides equations that can be applied to estimate the cyclic accumulation of lateral displacements of pile groups as well as the cyclic changes of the load distribution within pile groups.

Full-scale Lateral Load Test of a 3x5 Pile Group in Sand

Book Description
The load resisted by the single pile was greater than the average load resisted by each pile in the pile group. While the loads resisted by the first row of piles (i.e. the only row deflected away from all other rows of piles) were approximately equal to that resisted by the single pile, following rows resisted increasingly less load up through the fourth row. The fifth row consistently resisted more than the fourth row. The pile group in sand resisted much higher loads than did the pile group in clay.
