Book Description
D.G.JULIAN Cardiology has been advancing on a broad front and in recent years we have learned much about the basic mechanisms underlying heart disease, and developed many new methods of diagnosis and treatment. This book discusses in depth some of the most important aspects of these. One of the most exciting areas of research has been in molecular biology; Tybjrerg-Hansen and Humphries describe how, following the pioneering Nobel prize-winning work of Goldstein and Brown, gene probes are being used to discover the genetic causes of coronary artery disease, especially in the hyperlipidaemias but also in thrombotic states. These developments, together with the introduction of powerful lipid-lowering agents has triggered interest in the primary hyperlipidaemias, which are frequently hereditary. Betteridge discusses their diagnosis and management. Quyyumi describes how a greater knowledge of the physiology and pathology of the coronary circulation has led to a better understanding of the causes of angina pectoris and of 'silent ischaemia'. Crean deals with the difficult topic of unstable angina, which has caused a lot of controversy in the past, but whose investigation and management is now broadly agreed.

ISBN: 1464805202
Category : Medical
Languages : en

Book Description
Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Clinical Cardiology: Current Practice Guidelines

Clinical Cardiology: Current Practice Guidelines PDF Author: Demosthenes G. Katritsis
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191081582
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1009

Book Description
Clinical Cardiology: Current Practice Guidelines Updated Edition is an essential tool for the busy clinician, offering succinct yet detailed access to the most recent trial and guideline data supporting practice and patient management in cardiology. ESC and ACC/AHA guidelines are continually updated and often overlap in their advice, making it difficult for the cardiologist to obtain a clear picture of the right way to diagnose and treat disease according to the latest evidence base. Written by leading authorities in the field, this book, together with its regularly-updated online version, provides a unique solution. The authors have scrutinized all available guidelines and research from both ACC/AHA and ESC on every clinical issue. The result is a rigorous examination of the implications of published guidance, illustrated by more than 600 easy-to-follow tables and 200 full-colour images, which reinforce key points and clarify difficult concepts. 87 comprehensive chapters explore the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of cardiac disease. Two new chapters examine the univentricular heart and venous thrombembolism. Each chapter encompasses the latest published research, followed by discussions of possible presentations and investigations, offering detailed insights for clinicians into best practice for diagnosis and treatment. Providing at-a-glance access to the best guidance in cardiology, this book offers a diagnosis and management toolkit which no practising cardiologist can afford to be without.

Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac Surgery PDF Author: A.C. Cernaianu
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 146151925X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
The topics in this book represent the presentations given at the Seventh Annual Meeting entitled "Cardiac Surgery: Current Issues," held at the Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, November 9-12, 1994. This symposium was sponsored by the American College of Chest Physicians in conjunction with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Cooper HospitallUniversity Medical Center, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Camden, New Jersey. Chapter authors were charged with the task of writing brief overviews of major issues related to the field of cardiac surgery. The book is specifically tailored to the needs of cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiovascular perfusionists, allied health professionals, and nurs ing personnel involved in all phases of caring for the cardiac surgical patient. Although intended as a reference source with emphasis on updated approaches applied in cardiac surgery, it is hoped that the discussion of these topics will compliment other texts and manuscripts. Obviously, a book of this length cannot cover the whole multidisciplinary and complex field of cardiac surgery. However, co-editors are certain that the annual appearance of this text will highlight comprehensive, new, and interesting approaches to the field of cardiac surgery. The co-editors are greatly thankful to the contributors for their efforts in providing comprehensive chapters. Without their expertise, this work may not have been possible. We would also like to thank Ms. Eileen Birmingham and the staff at Plenum Publishing Corporation for their tremendous help in completing this work.
