Assay of Calcium-regulating Hormones

Assay of Calcium-regulating Hormones PDF Author: D. D. Bikle
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461255538
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 399

Book Description
The ability to measure accurately the hormones regulating calcium homeosta sis is the fundamental first step toward understanding the roles these hormones play in health and disease. Techniques for such measurements have only been available for the past 10 years or so and remain in a state of rapid development. Sensitive parathyroid hormone (PTH) radioimmunoassays appeared in the early 1970s, and with them came a whole new appreciation for the prevalence and implications of hyperparathyroidism, primary or secondary, in the popu lation. The calcitonin (CT) radioimmunoassay came later and achieved rapid success in the. diagnosis of a previously poorly understood cancer, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, frequently associated with the familial multiple endo crine neoplasia type 2 syndromes (a and b). As the sensitivity of the calcitonin radioimmunoassay has improved, our understanding of the role of calcitonin in normal physiological processes has increased. The knowledge that vitamin D must be metabolized to produce its biologic effects is only 15 years old. This has had profound implications in our understanding of a variety of metabolic bone, kidney, and gastrointestinal diseases. Assays to measure the major cir culating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, were described 10 years ago. Assays for the other metabolites, in particular, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, were described even more recently. As of today, we know of many vitamin D metabolites and have developed the techniques to measure most of them; how ever, many questions remain concerning their physiological role.

New Developments in Calcium Signaling Research

New Developments in Calcium Signaling Research PDF Author: Masayoshi Yamaguchi
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781629486048
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
The calcium metabolism in the living body is skillfully regulated through calcium-regulating hormones, including the parathyroid hormone, active vitamin D3 metabolite and calcitonin. The blood calcium concentration is ten thousand-fold compared with the levels in cells. Cells use extracellular calcium to regulate cell function efficiently. Intracellular calcium homeostasis is exactly regulated through the mechanism related to various calcium transport systems in cells. Signal transduction plays a pivotal role in cellular regulation. Calcium signaling is probably the most ubiquitous cellular signal that mediates the action of many hormones, cytokines, and neurotransmitters. Calcium regulates the activity of numerous calcium-dependent proteins including protein kinases, protein phosphatases, protease and other calcium-regulating factors involved in calcium signaling. Calcium signaling plays a pivotal role in the regulation of manifold cellular functions including cell proliferation, apoptosis and gene expression. This book focuses on recent topics in calcium signaling and its related diseases.

Calcium-Regulating Hormones and Cardiovascular Function

Calcium-Regulating Hormones and Cardiovascular Function PDF Author: M.F. Crass, III

ISBN: 9780849386619
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
This is the first book to exclusively address the actions of calcium-regulating hormones and peptides in the cardiovascular system. With 111 illustrations and 13 tables, this comprehensive volume includes: An extensive and critical review of present knowledge of the structure, synthesis, secretion, metabolism, receptors, signal transduction, and actions on classical target cells of each of the calcium-regulating hormones and peptides Discussions on parathyroid hormone and calcitonin, parathyroid hormone-related protein, parathyroid hypertensive factor, 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D3, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and certain steroid hormones in terms of vascular biology and cardiac function The integrated physiology of calcium-regulating hormones in terms of blood pressure regulation in normotensive and hypertensive settings State-of-the-art electrophysiological techniques used by leading cardiovascular biologists to assess calciotropic hormone effects on calcium channel currents in both vascular smooth muscle and cardiac myocytes Studies on the regulation of hormone and receptor gene expression in the context of possible regulation of local and systemic blood flow and cardiac function by calcium-regulating hormones and peptides

Calcium in Human Health

Calcium in Human Health PDF Author: Connie M. Weaver
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1592599613
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 442

Book Description
The Nutrition and Health Series of books have had great success because each volume has the consistent overriding mission of providing health professionals with texts that are essential because each includes (1) a synthesis of the state of the science; (2) timely, in-depth reviews by the leading researchers in their respective fields; (3) extensive, - to-date fully annotated reference lists; (4) a detailed index; (5) relevant tables and figures; (6) identification of paradigm shifts and the consequences; (7) virtually no overlap of information between chapters, but targeted, interchapter referrals; (8) suggestions of areas for future research; and (9) balanced, data-driven answers to patient/health prof- sionals’ questions that are based on the totality of evidence rather than the findings of any single study. The series volumes are not the outcome of a symposium. Rather, each editor has the potential to examine a chosen area with a broad perspective, both in subject matter as well as in the choice of chapter authors. The international perspective, especially with regard to public health initiatives, is emphasized where appropriate. The editors, whose trainings are both research- and practice-oriented, have the opportunity to develop a primary objective for their book; define the scope and focus, and then invite the leading authorities from around the world to be part of their initiative. The authors are encouraged to provide an overview of the field, discuss their own research, and relate the research findings to potential human health consequences.
