Book Description
Curious Creatures in Zoology is an examination of the world's most interesting creatures, both real and fantastical and is the work of author John Ashton. The book opens with a brief introduction in which the author lays out his purpose for writing the book and the methodology used in doing so. This is not a work of science, but rather a collection of accounts of the world's most curious creatures as they have appeared in writings by various authors throughout history. The opening chapters of the book examine humans and human-like creatures, including early men, wild men, and so-called "hairy men." The author also includes sections on giants and pygmies. From there, Ashton transitions to more mythical creatures, including centaurs, unicorns, and lamias. Throughout the book, which includes sections on more than 100 creatures, the author sprinkles in descriptions of real animals, including dolphins, scorpions, ants, whales, hornets, to name but a few, however more space is definitely devoted to the more fantastical creatures however. While John Ashton is listed as the author of Curious Creatures in Zoology, much of the writing in this collection is actually done by other authors and are included in Ashton's book as quotations. The subject matter is treated with an air of seriousness, which may seem perplexing for the modern reader but is a clear indicator of the time period in which this book was written. The entries themselves are all quite interesting, and will appeal to anybody interested in mythological creatures. The book is also an excellent case study into man's understanding of the world around him, and the developments we have made in our knowledge of the animal kingdom. Curious Creatures in Zoology is an entertaining read, perhaps even more so for the serious treatment it provides to what are now commonly known to be fictional creatures. Ashton's book is recommended to anybody curious about the animal kingdom, both real and fantastic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Curious Creatures in Zoology “TRAVELLERS see strange things,” more especially when their writing about, or delineation of, them is not put under the microscope of modern scientific examination. Our ancestors were content with what was given them, and being, as a rule, a stay-at-home race, they could not confute the stories they read in books. That age of faith must have had its comforts, for no man could deny the truth of what he was told. But now that modern travel has subdued the globe, and inquisitive strangers have poked their noses into every portion of the world, “the old order changeth, giving place to new,” and, gradually, the old stories are forgotten. It is to rescue some of them from the oblivion into which they were fast falling, that I have written, or compiled, this book. I say compiled it, for I am fonder of letting old authors tell their stories in their old-fashioned language, than to paraphrase it, and usurp the credit of their writings, as is too much the mode now-a-days. It is not given to every one to be able to consult the old Naturalists; and, besides, most of them are written in Latin, and to read them through is partly unprofitable work, as they copy so largely one from another. But, for the general reader, selections can be made, and, if assisted by accurate reproductions of the very quaint wood engravings, a book may be produced which, I venture to think, will not prove tiring, even to a superficial reader. Perhaps the greatest wonders of the creation, and the strangest forms of being, have been met with in the sea; and as people who only occasionally saw them were not draughtsmen, but had to describe the monsters they had seen on their return to land, their effigies came to be exceedingly marvellous, and unlike the originals. The Northern Ocean, especially, was their abode, and, among the Northern nations, tales of Kraken, Sea-Serpents, Whirlpools, Mermen, &c., &c., lingered long after they were received with doubt by other nations; but perhaps the most credulous times were the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when no travellers’ tales seem too gross for belief, as can well be seen in the extreme popularity, throughout all Europe, of the “Voyages and Travels of Sir John Maundeville,” who, though he may be a myth, and his so-called writings a compilation, yet that compilation represented the sum of knowledge, both of Geography, and Natural History, of countries not European, that was attainable in the first half of the fourteenth century. All the old Naturalists copied from one another, and thus compiled their writings. Pliny took from Aristotle, others quote Pliny, and so on; but it was reserved for the age of printing to render their writings available to the many, as well as to represent the creatures they describe by pictures (“the books of the unlearned”), which add so much piquancy to the text. Mine is not a learned disquisition. It is simply a collection of zoological curiosities, put together to suit the popular taste of to-day, and as such only should it be critically judged.

Early Modern Zoology: The Construction of Animals in Science, Literature and the Visual Arts (2 vols.)
Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047422368
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 717
Book Description
The new definition of the animal is one of the fascinating features of the intellectual life of the early modern period. The sixteenth century saw the invention of the new science of zoology. This went hand in hand with the (re)discovery of anatomy, physiology and – in the seventeenth century – the invention of the microscope. The discovery of the new world confronted intellectuals with hitherto unknown species, which found their way into courtly menageries, curiosity cabinets and academic collections. Artistic progress in painting and drawing brought about a new precision of animal illustrations. In this volume, specialists from various disciplines (Neo-Latin, French, German, Dutch, History, history of science, art history) explore the fascinating early modern discourses on animals in science, literature and the visual arts. The volume is of interest for all students of the history of science and intellectual life, of literature and art history of the early modern period. Contributors include Rebecca Parker Brienen, Paulette Choné, Sarah Cohen, Pia Cuneo, Louise Hill Curth, Florike Egmond, Karl A.E. Enenkel, Susanne Hehenberger, Annemarie Jordan-Gschwendt, Erik Jorink, Johan Koppenol, Almudena Perez de Tudela, Vibeke Roggen, Franziska Schnoor, Paul J. Smith, Thea Vignau-Wilberg, and Suzanne J. Walker.

Curious Naturalists
Author: Dr. Niko Tinbergen
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1787209016
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 442
Book Description
Dr. Niko Tinbergen was well known as a naturalist and a student of animal behaviour in England, on the Continent and in the United States. Ever since he was a young student in Holland he had been curious about nature, and in this book he sets out some of the facts that 25 years of curiosity gave him. As a biologist, anything living was his province—the bee-killing wasps and the digger wasps of the Dutch sand dunes; the Snow Bruntings and Phalaropes of Greenland; Hobbies and other hawks; moths and butterflies in various parts of England and Holland; Black-headed Gulls of the Ravenglass nature reserve, Cumberland, the Kittiwakes and Eider Ducks of the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland. Readers cannot fail to be struck—and possibly sometimes amused—by the patience and ingenuity shown in the field studies undertaken by Dr. Tinbergen and his fellow naturalists—and which are now passed on for the benefit and interest of his readers. The studies were always undertaken seriously, but this did not prevent Dr. Tinbergen from writing about them in the liveliest way; he realised that quite often he and his friends must have seemed to onlookers to be very curious naturalists indeed.
