This report presents the results of cultural resources investigations of a 40-acre borrow area for the West Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee Item W-123 in Patterson, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. Fieldwork consisted of a program of shovel testing within the proposed borrow area and the adjoining access road. In addition to the shovel tests, two backhoe trenches were excavated in the northeast corner of the borrow area. No sites were observed during survey. No standing structures were present in the borrow area. No further work is recommended.

Book Description
The project area consisted of 13 proposed borrow tracts. Background investigations of area prehistory, history, and geomorphology were used to identify geomorphic features within the project tracts which possessed a high probability for containing archeological resources. Field methods incorporated various levels of survey intensity to accommodate both these high-probability areas and other zones where the likelihood of cultural resources was much smaller. Twelve of the 13 borrow areas were at least partially covered with standing water, preventing implementation of archeological survey over the entire project area. No cultural resources were identified as a result of these investigations. No further archeological investigations are recommended. Supplementary investigations outside the project area attempted study of 3 previously recorded archeological sites and 2 reported locales with the potential to contain cultural resources. Brief study of 16IV4 (Bayou Sorrel /Mounds) resulted in a sketch map presenting the cemetary mound in relation to the protection levee. Survey at 16IV13, recorded as a single-mound site, located a possible second mound. 16IV15 could not be relocated.

Book Description
Archeological survey was conducted in two areas within Item M-178.0 to 173.2-R.A total of 104.75 acres were surveyed. A total of 65 auger tests and four shovel tests were excavated. Auger tests to a depth of 2 m spaced at 50 m intervals were excavated along the toe of levee between Levee Station 0+00 and 50+68 within the Lafourche Basin Levee district. In addition, auger tests to a depth of 2 m were excavated at 35 m intervals within a proposed borrow area located within the boundaries of the Atchafalaya Basin Levee District between Levee Stations 6168+00 and 6188+00. No archeological sites were located in either of the two survey areas. No further work is recommended.
