Book Description
Poetry. "A highly original vision, voice, concept, style, language and image all working together to produce a world inside our world. Filled with fire and violence, mystery and magic, the loneliness of laundromats, rented houses, suicide, cornfields, hunger, and ultimately a naked raw survival, 'charred walls pulled back from the frame.'"--Dorianne Laux "The genius of Jessica Cuello's LIAR is signaled by the (mis)spellings. Spelling, capitaliza-tion, and punctuation were not standardized until the eighteenth century, the era of printers and profit. These poems remind us that children, before they are indoctrinated into a world of correctness and pecuniary value, absorb the raw emotions swirling around them. Children hear truth even as they are told to spell it differently. The trauma of that disparity is conveyed in these poems. LIAR carries the reader into the world of a child for whom 'love is the sideswipe in the hall.'"--Natasha Sajeé "In her gutting LIAR, Jessica Cuello, a master of the persona poem, flings off the mask to bare and bear remembered and imagined pasts. Writing often from the point of view of a child, Cuello's intricate and spellbinding poems take us on a journey of hunger and house burnings, lost fathers and distant mothers, laundromats and lust,--girls longing to wear something other than shame, to claim and hold themselves in welcoming arms. 'Uncross,' she writes, 'Let your chest see.' Through poem after poem, she uncrosses, she welcomes them."--Philip Metres

Argentine Serialised Radio Drama in the Infamous Decade, 1930–1943

Argentine Serialised Radio Drama in the Infamous Decade, 1930–1943 PDF Author: Lauren Rea
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317178696
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
In her study of key radio dramas broadcast from 1930 to 1943, Lauren Rea analyses the work of leading exponents of the genre against the wider backdrop of nation-building, intellectual movements and popular culture in Argentina. During the period that has come to be known as the infamous decade, radio serials drew on the Argentine literary canon, with writers such as Héctor Pedro Blomberg and José Andrés González Pulido contributing to the nation-building project as they reinterpreted nineteenth-century Argentina and repackaged it for a 1930s mass audience. Thus, a historical romance set in the tumultuous dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas reveals the conflict between the message transmitted to a mass audience through popular radio drama and the work of historical revisionist intellectuals writing in the 1930s. Transmitted at the same time, González Pulido’s gauchesque series evokes powerful notions of Argentine national identity as it explores the relationship of the gaucho with Argentina’s immigrant population and advocates for the ideal contribution of women and the immigrant population to Argentine nationhood. Rea grounds her study in archival work undertaken at the library of Argentores in Buenos Aires, which holds the only surviving collection of scripts of radio serials from the period. Rea’s book recovers the contribution that these products of popular culture made to the nation-building project as they helped to shape and promote the understanding of Argentine history and cultural identity that is widely held today.

Trump's World

Trump's World PDF Author: Theodore Roosevelt Malloch
Publisher: Humanix Books
ISBN: 1630061328
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 327

Book Description
A phrase has come into the Zeitgeist – calling people the “Trump of their field.” Elon Musk is the Trump of business. Many leaders still do not know how to react to President Trump; to his decision to control immigration; 3+% economic growth and, especially, to the absolutely justified desire to implement a pro-US policy. Europe has been awakened from its somnolence by the vigor and determination with which US President Donald Trump has changed the face of America and indeed, the entire world. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, mainland Europe has been stuck in the old politics of the 20th century. The annihilation of the European Socialists in the European Parliament and the European Council (where they only count a handful of heads of state) is birthing a new European era. Europe, like the rest of the world, needs Trump in order to re-learn how to do politics, instead of winding endless tales from which no one understands anything, and no one takes any firm decisions. The Trump of America must lead the world in uniting Western Civilization against an onslaught of weak, feeble centrists and leftists at home and abroad. Europe needs Trump in order to wake up from its zealous overconfidence in its capacity to assimilate millions of non-Europeans into its cultures. The world also needs Trump and America to learn the value of the nation state and policies based on the community called the "nation." Every nation in the world needs a president or prime minister like Donald Trump – pushing their nation towards its greater destiny. Every nation needs presidents that puts their nation first and fights for the interests of those who voted for them! Trump's World shows how Trump has bent the arc of modern history in the US and how other leaders will do the same across the world as popular sovereignists win the day.

Fields of Resistance

Fields of Resistance PDF Author: Silvia Giagnoni
Publisher: Haymarket Books
ISBN: 1608460940
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
“Gignoni tells the stories of farmworkers, mothers, priests, and plutocrats with compassion, poetry, and fierce humanity.” —Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved Migrant farmworkers in the United States are routinely forced to live and work in unsafe, often desperate, conditions. In response, farmworkers in Immokalee, Florida—known as America’s tomato capital—formed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW). Against powerful adversaries, the CIW went on to launch nationwide campaigns that have forced the corporate giants of the fast food world—McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell—and grocery industries to concede to their demands for increased wages and just working conditions. As their struggle, and that of immigrants and low-wage workers everywhere, continues, Silvia Giagnoni presents their remarkable story. “Captures the brilliant, difficult, and sustained organizing work of immigrant activists against the megacorporations, such as Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Whole Foods, that profit from their labor. If there was ever any doubt that workers’ rights are human rights, this book will put the notion to rest.” —Vanessa Tait, author of Poor Workers’ Unions: Rebuilding Labor from Below “A sweet victory for social justice. A testament to the tenacity of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.” —Katrina Vanden Heuvel, editor of the Nation “The Immokalee farmworkers’ heroic struggle for justice in the fields is an inspiring reminder of the value of hope and the power of solidarity.” —Tom Morello, guitarist, songwriter, and activist
